How much notice to give when leaving a nanny job?

I have a friend that is a nanny, and she has an interview for a new job. She will be interviewing on August 9th, and then if hired she will start Sept 12th.

She called this morning to ask how long of a notice she should give. I told her that I thought a month was more than respectful. Do you agree?

  • Does she have a contract? If so I'd check that to make sure they didnt agree on something in the beginning. BUT yes, I think 30 days is perfect!

Nope. No contract. She has been with them 5+ years, so she is just freaking out that she needs to give them at least 2 months or so.

  • Is she pursuing another nanny job or something different? If she's been with them for that long can she just tell them the truth... that an opportunity presented itself and she wants to try for it, but it has nothing to do with them??

Something different, but she has been unhappy for a while. However,  that is exactly what I told her to tell them. Something came up and she can't pass it up.

Well, I think 30 days is adequate and better than what some might give. Hopefully it works out for her!!

  • I would just tell them as soon as she knows if she has the job. Which it sounds like will be about 1 month advance. I wouldn't say anything yet in case it falls through.

Yeah, she definitely won't be saying anything yet.
