Starting to worry I'm not biologically female...
I perused some of the trailers on my Apple TV, and stopped on every chick flick. ?They all. ?look. ?awful.
I think I'd literally rather die than see Nights in Rodanthe. ?Twilight looks abysmal. ?And I'm actually offended by Confessions of a Shopaholic. ?
Yeah, I only got excited over Quantum of Solace. ?The runner up was The Changeling. ?Yay for true historical movies.?

Re: Starting to worry I'm not biologically female...
No I hate most chick flicks too.
Although I did actually think 13 Going On 30 was cute, much to my dismay. Chick flicks are OK for when you've had a bad day and want to watch something that requires zero thought and isn't the slightest bit realistic or depressing.
I think The Changeling looks really good but I don't want to see it because it's a true story and the true story was really, really sad. Very excited for Quantum of Solace though!
I can't wait for Quantum of Solace! Chick flicks usually are terrible. But that's because Hollywood has to dumb them down so that women understand them. We're simple like that.
Personally, my fave genres are sci fi and intelligent action-adventure.
This. I don't watch chick flicks with the expectation of feeling like I learned something at the end of it.
Though I am going to say that I really liked the Twilight books and I am going to see the movie, even if it might suck. You can judge me, I deserve it.
my read shelf:
The Changeling was quite good, even with Angelina Jolie as the lead. The story was amazing in that it was a real one and the LAPD was so, so corrupt that they pulled this sort of thing.
I look forward to Quantum of Solace as well---I love James Bond movies, though, so it is no surprise.
Ha! I had the same reaction to that book! I couldn't find anything redeeming about it. I'm baffled by its popularity.
my read shelf:
I read one chick lit novel called Jemima J, by Jane Green, just to see what the fuss was about. NEVER AGAIN.
I hate the concept of chick flicks. You need to dumb something down and recycle the same plot over and over just for women to like it?
However, there are some good romantic comedies -- some classic like When Harry Met Sally, and even some more recent ones. I really liked Fever Pitch with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore. But I love Boston, the Red Sox and Drew Barrymore so it was an easy sell.
Ditto this with the exception of 13 Going on 30. I could not bring myself to watch that one.
Nights in Rodanthe though might be good though. It does have Diane Lane who I really like and Richard Gere.
I don't have much to back this up, but I feel like the movie industry doesn't really get what women want. Movies like Made of Honor (which I heard was My Best Friend's Wedding recycled but with an even more cliche plot) don't really do that well. It made $46 mil, domestic. However, the Sex and the City Movie made $152 mil, and say what you like about it being worse than the show, it was a relatively well-done film and wasn't a cookie cutter "chick flick". So, why aren't more people going to see movies like Made of Honor? I suppose these chick flicks guarantee filmmakers a certain amount of profit and are easy to churn out, but women don't love these as much as one would think.
There ARE good movies for women out there-- Atonement, Rachel Getting Married, etc. But men can enjoy these, too. And women can enjoy some "guy movies". I guess I just resent the way the industry pushes men and women into seeing movies of a certain category. I don't want to see the same movie repackaged over and over again. Give me something original and well-done any day-- no matter what the genre.
Oh, and I recommend the movie Stardust if you're looking for a great story but with some romance in it. I don't think it was marketed very well--from the cover it looks like some random scifi. But it's actually more of a fairy tale and was so well-written. Super cute, and kind of Princess Bride-esque. I watched it with H and he really liked it.
Now I'm just rambling. Too much coffee
Ok...well I will admit to loving to read chick lit. They are fast, easy, mindless reads--about all I have time for anymore. I probably read 1 to 2 "quality" books a year. My problem is that if go more than a week without picking it up, I have to start over. With chick lit, if I don't remember what I've read, it doesn't matter. Books like shopoholic make me feel very responsible, so I like that boost, too.
Chick flicks, notsomuch. Not worth 2 hours of my time for the most part (with few exceptions).
