Another annoying baby name post by me. (long)

Upon finding out about the pregnancy, one of the first names I suggested to the hubs was "Jude."  He turned it down immediately.  Then, we found "Jett," but SIL/BIL just used that.  Then, I found "Joah."  (Sounds like Noah with a J and no, it's not made up; it means "God is his brother.")

H didn't really like anything, until his grandmother, out of the blue, suggested "Jude" (and told him to read the Book of Jude).  Finally, I told him to just let me know when the kid has a name.  ;)

Yesterday, out of the blue, H uses "Jude" in a sentence when speaking about the baby.   He says that's what he wants.  (Well, he really wants "Judah," but that's a no-go by me.)  Well now, I'm not sure I like "Jude" as well as I do "Joah."

I know "Joah" is kind of weird/different/possibly made-up sounding at first, but it's really starting to grow on me.  My only thoughts on this name are:  people will think it's made up; people will call him "Joe," (H has a bro by this name) and I'm not sure "Jack & Joah" sound as nice as "Jack & Jude."  And I realize all of these are pretty petty.

My biggest concern with "Jude," as it was before is it's ever-growing popularity.

Anyone care to persuade us one way or another?  Throw any thoughts you have on either name my way.

And, poll:

  • You came back! :)

My only concern with Jude is that when you say it with your last name it sounds like "Jew Lastname."  You lose the "d" sound in Jude.

    BUT I love Jude...it's a great name!

Oh yeah, that's another concern.  Our last name, which most of you probably know, begins with a "D."  And, of course, Jude, ends in a "d" sound - baby name "no-no."  Ugh.

  • When you mentioned Joah to me I thought it was a neat name (probably because it sounds like Noah).  It's def. different.  I have never heard it before.  But I really like Jude, too!  Before we had "Jude's" here I had only met one other person with that name, and no one else besides baby's here, so not sure if its popular, or just popular with us!

    I'm torn!

See, I never think this is an issue...if you named him Dave, then yes, that's an issue.  :)

  • My first reaction to Joah is, "no, not a name". I'm even less crazy about it with Jack.

While I like Jude, the last name issue would certainly be a strike against it.  Hmmm, tough call...

  • I love Jude, and I think it sounds fine with your last name.

If you love Joah, then go for it, but really think about how much correcting you are going to do.

I love my DS's name, and I think it fits him perfectly. However, the constant correcting is WAY worse than I ever imagined. Now, I feel guilty that he is going to hate his name when he is the one doing the correcting.

FWIW, DS's name isn't made up either, but most people think that we tried to give him a trending spelling of Ryan.

  • The popularity aspect of Jude would veer me in another direction, but you do have a Jack, which is also really popular.

My initial reaction to Joah is NO!  But the more I say it in my head, the more it grows on me.  I just wonder if people will think you forgot the "n" in Jonah.

  • I really don't think Jude *Insert Last Name* sounds bad at all!!  I actually like it together.

When I first say Joah, I read it as Jonah (somehow I added an "n" when there wasn't one).  Then I went back after reading further and thought, no, Joah.  I think you may be right in your assumptions about the name, however, you've gotta name him what you're comfortable with!!

Jack and Jude sounds great together!!

  • Like I said when you told me, I like how Joah sounds with your last name.   I can't move past JewDavis (and it's not just because we could possibly have Jude twins...cuz that's fun Big Smile).

Plus, Joah is a legit name so my vote is Joah :)

  • Love the name Jude but I'm also in the JewDavis camp. I like Joah but when I first read it I saw Joan. What about Joel, Josh, James, or Jace?
  • OK, I'm probably going to have to use veto powers on Jude; I can't have any JewDavises running 'round.

Amy - Regarding the ones you suggested, I have a "thing" with names:  Each one you suggested automatically reminds me of someone I know.  That said, I do like James for a middle name.  :)

  • I never thought about the JewD... until I said the name out loud. Hum...

I think that Joah is growing on me. I really like Joanah, but I think that you had an issue with it. I LOVE Jett and think that you should still use it, but if I was in the same situation I wouldn't use it either.

I like Joah, especially after saying it in my head a few times. It's kinda cool.

That being said, I had no clue how annoying it would be to correct people on my kid's name. I didn't even think Amelie was a hard name! A - makes the same sound as the A in August. Everyone automatically says Amelia. Um - no. Check that out. ie = y. a=a. easy as that, but apparently not. We didn't make it up either.  I've already apologized to her for people not getting it right.

As far as Owen. There are 3 (or 4?) Owens on this board but I know only 1 other Owen ILR. He was in my class last year. He didn't even meet my Owen. Popularity is relative. Jude is pretty classic. I strongly recommended it before we knew Amelie was Amelie. Kelly thought it was too "hipster" (ie: I still love off of my parents). I didn't agree but you have to agree on baby names so we had to throw it out. We settled on Simon. You can have it. I'll give it to you. :-)  (since I don't need it. aren't i nice??)

My SIL had a student by the name of Jules, like Jules Vern. I thought that was pretty BA. Jack and Jules. That could totally work.

  • Will it be a 'J' for sure?

I really don't think the D will get lost with Jude, although I can see it happening.  I'd steer clear of Jude just b/c of the popularity (no comment, cough~Tyler~cough) if that's a concern.  Joah is a bit too far out there and while it is considered a name, it just looks like you made it up.  Sorry.

My suggestion - Beckett :)   I wanted to use it for #2 but couldn't bear to have two boy B's in the family.

Good luck!  Names are freaking hard.  Both of ours were decided either the night before or mid-labor.

Agree!!! We chose C literally as we were calling our parents to tell them that he was here. We had it narrowed down to 2 before I went in to labor (3 weeks early) but it was definately a game-time decision! Whatever you pick will be perfect :)

  • I'm on the "say no to JewDavis" team.

I also think you are right when Joah would just be called Joe for short (plus it sounds like jonah, but you left out the N to be yoonique). Jack and Joe sound too "jack and jill" to me. However, my advice means nothing because I am not a fan of same letter names for all of the kids.

    I know.  Me, too.  :(

I think that Joah is growing on me.

This is what most people say, which is why I still feel strongly about it - like, it will grow on people?  I don't know.

I really like Joanah, but I think that you had an issue with it.

Reminds me of the whale.  (I assume you're talking about Jonah.)

I LOVE Jett and think that you should still use it, but if I was in the same situation I wouldn't use it either.

Jack says everyday, "We can have two Jetts!"  No, we can't.  Honestly, though, after they used it, I'm not sure I love it as much, but perhaps I'm just in denial.

Jace, Jacob, Jarret, Jensen, Judd, Jules...

I could give you a reason for saying "no" to each, but I'll spare us.  ;)

See? This is what I'm sayin'! ;)

That being said, I had no clue how annoying it would be to correct people on my kid's name.

I'm wondering if I couldn't just get away with "Joah, like Noah with a J." It might get annoying, but hell, everyone asks if Jack, a common, simple name is short John or Jackson.

I didn't even think Amelie was a hard name! A - makes the same sound as the A in August. Everyone automatically says Amelia. Um - no. Check that out. ie = y. a=a. easy as that, but apparently not. We didn't make it up either. I've already apologized to her for people not getting it right.

OK, I know you've told me before, but how do you pronounce it again? :::hiding::: Embarrassed

My SIL had a student by the name of Jules, like Jules Vern. I thought that was pretty BA. Jack and Jules. That could totally work.

Jules would remind me of my BFF's sister, Julianne, who they call "Jules." Plus, I'm not sure it's "strong" enough. This is also the reason for throwing out Julian and Jasper.

    Surprisingly enough, H & I both agree it should be a "J."

Yes, as suggested above, Jack is also very popular so I shouldn't worry about popularity, but I do.

See, I do wonder why Joah is considered "out there," but Jonah is not.  They're both in the Bible!  It's because of the damn whale, isn't it?!   ;)

My suggestion - Beckett :)   I wanted to use it for #2 but couldn't bear to have two boy B's in the family.

I do like Beckett!  If we were going to forego the J, we'd go for Eli.

Good luck!  Names are freaking hard.  Both of ours were decided either the night before or mid-labor.

I told H last night, "Why don't we just wait until 'Baby J' is born?"  He doesn't want to, and neither do I, really, but eff man, it IS hard.  And, I do think (hope!!) we'll just "know."

So it would probably kill you to know that I would've strongly considered "Jill" had this been a girl, huh?  H wouldn't entertain the idea.  I think it would've been awesome.  ;)

Regarding the same letter thing, if this weren't going to be the final kid, I probably wouldn't be doing this.  :)

I do like Jace better. Jace D-- - sounds like a racecar driver, or a  football player.

Jace is OK, but reminds me of the homecoming king in high school.  Can't do it.

Then I'm officially on team 'Jace' if it's going to be a J.

Technically, I've never read the bible so neither stick out to me as a biblical name.  Jonah = Jonah Hill over here.  I've actually heard of people having the name Jonah, that's all :)   Although, all this Joah talk and it's growing on me too!

Hold strong!  DH and I were not in agreement when I went into labor with #1.  Then he freaked out when he saw what labor really entailed.  He readily caved to Brody :)   Might not work as well with #2.
