Mamas: BF Support Groups

My sister said this was a huge help for her and it gave her something to do to get out of the house with her son, so I'm trying to find some.

I saw there's one at Baptist South on the 3rd Wed. of the month and a LLL on the 4th Wed. of the month at a church in Riverside. Has anyone been to either of these, or do you have any other recommendations?

Re: Mamas: BF Support Groups

  • I never sought BF support in a group, but kellymom.com is a great resource!

  • I went to the LLL in Orange Park. It was interesting. There is one in Mandarin, but it is on Wednesday nights. I used my doula and kellymom.com for BFing support. You will also have access to the Lactation Consultants at Baptist, for free.
  • I didn't go to any.. after hearing stories, LLL scared me.  I just used my doula and the LC's at the hospital and my best friends mom (she is a LC).  Kellymom is great too!

Do you need to ask for them when you're in the hospital? Or do they make the rounds and visit with you? Also, can you go back and meet with them later on, or is it just while you're there for the delivery?

  • They will come see you since you're BFing (at least they did at Bap't South), but if you're having ANY issues or ANY pain before they make it to you, ask your nurse to send them to you ASAP.

You can call them and go back in for help/support after you're discharged as well.

And seriously, I'll give you my number and you can call me.  I went through hell nursing B and wouldn't wish that on anyone.  Ask for help if you have any issues, don't let it hurt.  You might be sore and that's normal but it shouldn't be painful.

  • Yes, please don't be afraid to ask any of us if you have questions. I'm more than happy to help you.
  • Thanks, all :) I'm feeling really good about everything else regarding having the baby and such, but breastfeeding still terrifies me and doesn't seem like it's going to come naturally... but it's absolutely something I want to do, so I'll be sure to ask!

Everything downtown works how K&A explained South. In L&D tell or have your DH tell all nurses in the room that you want to latch baby on immediately after delivery. Have your DH tell the nursery nurse. I know that some of the nursery nurses are also lactation consultants. Depending on how strongly you feel about breastfeeding, you may want to drill into your DH about no bottles. I say this because C had to continuously argue with the nursery nurse wanting to give Luke a bottle. Luke was over nine pounds, so they insist on testing blood sugar then. His sugar was low, so they acted like he MUST have formula or he could end up in NICU. After he nursed the second time (within the first hour of birth) his blood sugar was back within normal range. If you want help or have questions, please ask. (Sorry for no spacing, on my phone)
  • I'm in the same boat as Ashlee.  I definitely want to do it, but it scares me!  I don't know anyone personally who has done it.  Not too many of my friends have kids yet.  I was thinking of checking out a class, but I think my hospital uses LLL...and I heard stories that they're scary!  haha
  • LLL was interesting. I will go again when I have baby #2. I think of it as another resource. The LLL leader is someone else that I could call for help. There were somethings that opened my eyes wide, but we don't have to agree. I never knew anything about tandem nursing, prior to attending LLL.
  • This class was recommended by my Hypnobirthing instructor. We already took one at St. Vincents that I really enjoyed and made me a little more confident.

  • Kristin is awesome. I used her LC services after when we were having latch issues and she was so sweet and reassuring. She actually taught all my birth classes as well. She's a really good resource to have.
  • I used Kristin as a resource as well, she got our latch fixed so B wasn't killing me.  I had a hard time getting ahold of her but from what I've been told, that's not the norm for her.  I'd definitely recommend taking a class.  It's still going to be totally different when you're actually holding your little one and trying to work out what works best for the two of you, but you'll learn a lot about it in general and not be totally clueless when they hand you this little squirmy, hungry baby and said "alright, nurse!".

I agree with 4-8-06 too, make sure they're not giving artificial nipples in the hospital.  She needs to stimulate you as much as possible in the first few days to get your milk to come in.  Bap't South was really great about this and they stayed on top of me to nurse him every 2 hours (even when I didn't want to and was exhausted).  They never offered formula, which was a huge relief to me.  I was prepared to have to argue with them :)

  • I echo all pps' recommendations to give yourself the highest possible chance of success rate at bf'ing your baby.

I will also say that you are not a failure if it doesn't work out even after trying everything "correctly", or if you have to supplement with formula, or if you have to use a bottle here and there to give some recuperating time to your chafed nipples or to allow your DH to feed the baby on occasion, or if you give your baby a pacifier as a self-soothing instrument.

I was lucky enough in that I was able to bf for 6 months which was my own goal even while not doing everything "correctly".

So true.  It's not all or nothing, nothing with parenting ever is.  I had some serious issues and we had to supplement a good bit.

Very well said. Do what works for you and Baby Vdub, even if others say other wise. A happy momma makes a happy baby and vice versa.
  • Thanks for the encouragement! I'll be sure that the nurses and JJ all know that I want to try to EBF at the hospital... and I'm completely 100% okay with getting help from any and everyone to make it work! My goal is also to BF for 6 months, I'll have to pump at work and that I'm not looking forward to, so that's why 6 months seems like a good initial goal.

I'll see if I can make that class, it's after my due date but I'll probably go overdue so it should work for me! I honestly can't tell you all how much I appreciate the support!

    Ashlee,

My friend gave me a few "No Bottle" cards for the hospital. I'll bring you one next time I see you if it's before V-Dub gets here.
