Summer vacation poll (because it is so damn boring in here)

What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on?  What made it so terrible?

On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back?

Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs?

What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish?

How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West?

How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into?

If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring?

Re: Summer vacation poll (because it is so damn boring in here)

  • What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on?  What made it so terrible? When I was 15, my parents took us to D.C.  Which I'm sure is a lovely place, but everything went wrong.  Our taxi driver got lost en route to the hotel.  Our room wasn't ready.  We didn't sleep at all the first night.  My sister's purse got stolen.  My dad was angry the whole time.  And our flight was canceled on the way back, after sending our luggage back on to CT.  The whole thing just went wrong.

On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back? The armrest hog.  I can deal with that, I just pull my elbows in.

Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs? My ILs.

What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish? I took a road trip from CT to North Carolina with three friends for a friend's wedding.  It was a lot of fun.

How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West? North: Prince Edward Island, Canada.  South: Key Largo, FL.  East: York, England.  West: LA, California.

How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into? Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean

If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring? I'd take H and we'd go to Europe.  England and Ireland at the very least.

  • What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on?  What made it so terrible? I don't think any of them have been terrible, but I have pretty limited vacation experience. Vacations for me growing up were driving to MN to hang out with my mom's family for a week or so.

On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back? Confession: I've never flown. DH and I might be going on a vacation in the fall where we'll actually fly somewhere.

Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs? This is really hard for me. I love my parents and my ILs are awesome. I'm going to say my ILs. We'd probably end up doing more things with them, whereas with my mom, it'd be a struggle to get her to do anything with us.

What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish? In high school, our orchestra went to Cincinatti for a competition. It was a pretty fun trip.

How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West? North - northern MN, South - southern IL, East - Cincinatti, West - the Black Hills in SD (I really have limited experience travelling)

How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into? 2 - Lake Michigan and Lake Superior

If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring? A warm beach somewhere with just DH where we'd just sit on the beach, drinking tropical drinks and soaking up the sun.

  • What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on? To be honest, I'm going to have to say my honeymoon (but being with DH made it better) What made it so terrible? I got bit/pinched by a crab (enough to bleed), got super sick as I was taking my swim test to scuba dive, lost money and the room key down the waterfall, and some of the food was less desirable.

On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back? I'd probably sit behind someone that leans the seat back, because I'm used to that, but I'm already weirded out enough by sitting next to strangers..

Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs? Gagh... both.. but I get along so well with my parents and am more used to them, so I'd go with my parents.

What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish? Longest road trip was from Nashville Tennessee to North Carolina... it was a little bit of both.. with 8 people in one van and going down "crookedy" roads, it was interesting, but with twin crying babies... not the most enjoyable ride haha

How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West? North... Oregon maybe.. or North Carolina... I can't calculate on the map very well. South- Mexico, East- North Carolina, West- Hawaii

How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into? 2 oceans, no great lakes...

If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring? Hawaii with DH!!!! definitely.

  • What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on?  What made it so terrible?  Went to Florida with my parents and best friend when I was 14.  Florida was great for the most part. One the way down, we stopped overnight in Atlanta.  The bed was so dirty, I wanted to sleep in the car.  We had hookers calling our room asking for one of their clients, then we moved rooms due the disturbance.  After moving rooms, we had hookers knocking on our door.  While in Florida, we went to an amusement part, and it started to flash flood.  We all were huddled in this restaurant with our feet on the chairs because the water was filling up the restaurant.  On the way back from Florida, we stopped in Gatlinburg, TN and our toilet flooded the hotel room.  My dad asked for a new room to no avail. The maintenance man was so incompetent that my dad had to plumb the toilet himself.

On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back?  Someone who leans back.  I can't stand being touched by strangers.

Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs? My parents definitely.  They drink and have a good time.  MIL would not have fun.

What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish?  I've driven from California to Ohio and back a couple times (4 days). I had fun every time.

How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West? North: I think Maine technically, but I have been to Canada.  South: Grenada in the southern Caribbean. East: Maine again.  West: California

How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into? Atlantic, Pacific, Caribbean Sea, all Great Lakes except for Superior.

If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring?  Take a Mediterranean cruise!  My hubby or my best friend.

  • What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on?  What made it so terrible?  The summer after high school, I went on an educational trip with a few people from school, a teacher, and people from other schools.  We went to Mexico, and went to a few different places.  I didn't really have fun, and by the end I was exhausted and cried to come home.

On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back?  Armrest... the seat thing would make me claustrophobic.

Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs?  Parents... although FIL isn't bad to vacation with (I've camped with him & DHs siblings).  I don't know that MIL & her husband would be much fun.

What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish? 8 hours to S. Padre Island... It was so fun.  Me, DH, my sister, and her then-boyfriend, who was DH's best friend, rode together, and my parents drove separately.  We were still in high school so the vacation was a bit scandalous at times... let's just say it wasn't my parents' best parenting choice to let the BFs come along haha.

How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West? South: Jamaica.  East: Europe, probably Germany, although sadly I don't know enough geography to know what the easternmost place I went was.  North: Canada.  West: Seattle.

How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into?  Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean.  So, 3.

If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring?  DH and I would go to Europe - Italy first, and then Paris or Dusseldorf, Germany.  (I studied abroad there in college and loved it so much - I'd love to share it with someone else though.)

  • What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on?  What made it so terrible?  I also had a horrible trip to DC in my teens.  My dad used to spend half the year there, but we usually didn't go because my mom didn't like it.  She was miserable, my parents fought, the weather was terrible, we missed a flight, etc.

On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back?  Oh, definitely the armrest hog... the seat leaning back means you can't easily read or eat.  However, I'd take either of those over Drunk Guy, Sleeping Mom with Hyper Toddler, Nosy Stranger, Proselytizer, or Lecherous Guy.  Unfortunately, I have sat next to each of them.

Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs?  Geez... neither.  When my mom was alive, I would have said parents, because my mom at least liked to sight see and do stuff.  My dad doesn't like too many activities and my ILs are worse, so it would be pretty boring.

What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish?  Just to put this in perspective:  in California you can easily drive for a day and still be in California.  So all road trips are long.  When I was a child we drove to Canada once and New Mexico once.  Both were probably 3-4 days each way and hellish.  I don't like sitting that long and my parents fought most of the time on both trips.  Yes, it's possible to fight for over a week at a time.

How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West? North:  London; South:  Singapore (although that will change soon because we are going to Peru in October); East and West are a little tough... can I say India for both?  It's about the same distance from California if you go either way.

How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into?  The Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans and the South China Sea.  We also have two major bays here (San Francisco and Monterrey), and I've also been in Lake Tahoe, but I don't know if they're "major" bodies of water.

If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring?  The Galapagos Islands with DH and our friends D and A.  D is a marine biologist so he and I could enjoy diving and DH and A could do more relaxing stuff.  And D and A are fun and like eating so they would be great vacation company.  And yes, I realize $5000 would not really cover that trip, but I can dream can't I?

  • What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on?  What made it so terrible? Cape Cod when I was 13 - it was really only bad because I was at the 13 year old stage and there were spiders in the house! I still hate spiders but I can at least semi-deal now.

On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back? Behind some who leans back

Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs? hmmm tough one, I have been on vacation with the IL's and I probably can deal with them better because I can tune them out, I can't tune out my mom

What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish? NY to TX, it was fun - but it was with my cousins aunt and uncle, if it were my siblings we would have been fighting

How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West? Canada - Aruba - CA

How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into? hmmm, 4? Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Lake Michigan

If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring? I would bring only H and we would go to an island, maybe Bermuda this time

  • What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on?  What made it so terrible?  I don't know if I've had any HORRIBLE vacations. Probably one of the trips to FL when I was a teenager, because seriously? Hanging out with FAMILY for a whole week? ew. ha.
On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back?  Oh, definitely the armrest hog... I always get a window seat (yes, always. I used to fly a ton so I know how to get my way...) so I just lean against the window 'wall' anyway.  Granted, none of this really bugs me though. I don't fly with the expectation of having a ton of relaxing/stretching room, you know? I pretty much have my body trained to fall asleep before the instructions and wake up as we land.
Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs?  Can I just choose my dad? He loves to travel and try new places- we never make reservations when we're on vacation, and we usually end up eating at little local places. My mom is a crabby ball of stress on vacation. They're divorced, though, so the odds of going on vacation with both of them anyway is pretty slim ;)
What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish?  When I was younger, we (mom, dad, siblings) took a road trip to Atlanta from Central WI to surprise my mom's family at Thanksgiving.  Getting there was a ton of fun, because I got to hang out with my dad in the front seat the whole time.  Then the van died the morning we were supposed to leave, so it was super awful tension the whole way home after we finally got back on the road. I think it was 18 hours of driving, and we just stopped one night. In high school, I took a sweet road trip out to WA state with my aunt/uncle and cousins.  We spent 4-5 nights in Montana at Glacier National Park which was absolutely gorgeous. We went to a real rodeo too ;) PP- what kind of driving do your parents do? FOUR days to get out of Cali? That seems ridiculous. How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West? North:  Alaska. (Not Juneau either- way up there in the middle of nowhere). South: Costa Rica? El Salvador? I have horrible geography skills- whichever of those is furthest south. haha East: Dominican Republic. (That's east of the East Coast, right?) West: Cali... or I guess Alaska may have been further west.)How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into?  I've walked across the Mississippi River! Does that count? :) Um... Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. I think all 5 Great Lakes at this point. When I was in Costa Rica, we saw both coasts in the same weekend. It was stunning.
If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring?  Throughout Europe... well at least as far as $5000 will get us :) London and Germany fo sho though.
  • What is the WORST vacation you've ever been on?  What made it so terrible?

Haha. Well, once I drove for 15 hours up the East Coast with my twin sister and her babies in the middle of the night (so they'd sleep). It POURED on 95 the ENTIRE way. It was like the rain cloud was hovering over us. It was that trip that we discovered that 95 is in bad shape... there weren't hardly any lights or reflectors and we literally could not see our lanes all night long between the rain and darkness and spent the entire trip afraid of hydroplaning or driving out of our lane. We almost had a fatal accident at one point when two cars were racing each other at 3am on a dark night during a downpour? Oh, and I forgot to mention that literally the hour we left for the drive, I came down with a massive sinus infection out of nowhere.

When we arrived at my sister's in-laws at sunrise, we literally fell out of the open car doors, bedraggled and wearing sweat pants (these folks always look clean cut). At which point, I went to get my 1-year-old neice... and realized she was covered... covered... in poo. She had been sleeping all night in it and her car seat had soaked it all up. The rest of the trip was a whirlwind where we never caught up on sleep and the car smelled like a porta potty.

On an airplane, would you rather sit next to a person who hogs the armrest, or behind someone who leans the seat back?

Someone who hogs the armrest. I am very petite and can handle narrow seats. But I feel so claustrophobic when the person in front of me leans the seat back.

Would you rather go on vacation with your parents, or with your ILs?

Wow, tough one. I can honestly say I'd love to be on a vacation with all of them. They are all fantastic and fun. But if I had to choose, I'd have to go with my family because it's so easy to really relax with my family without worrying about making a good impression.

What's the longest road-trip you've ever taken?  Was it fun, or hellish? Well, believe or not, the hellish trip I described above was not the longest road trip. I've had two longer ones: 1 with my dad, stepmom and twin from VA to Wyoming and back. We had a blast seeing the "entire" country together. 2. Was by myself. I drove up and down the East Coast, stopping at friends' places and a retreat house along the way. Overall, I drove over 30 hours before returning home over the course of 10 days. I had a blast. I love road trips.

How far north have you been?  South?  East?  West?

    North: UK

    South: Bahamas

    East: Germany

    West: California

How many major (re: oceans, seas, or Great Lakes) bodies of water have you dipped your toes into? Um...

    Lake Tahoe

    Atlantic Ocean

Pacific Ocean (I think? I am blanking)

    English Channel

If you had $5,000 to put towards a vacation, where would you go?  Who would you bring?

Hard choice... Europe: Italy, Spain, Austria

Would bring my husband and any other close family I could afford to bring. :)

PS: Sorry for all the typos. :( At work, and have to run...
