Computers for (non-techie) parent

My mom's computer is crapping out.  We got it for her 3-5years ago, I guess.  I'm trying to think of what would be the right sort of replacement (for us to gift her.)

She uses it for:

  • Word processing
  • Picture management (like getting pics in an email and printing or maybe transferring to her e-frame)
  • Email
  • Web cam/Skype

I don't know if a full blown desktop is her best bet. I can't imagine a tablet would suit her needs, and I think a laptop or netbook would be a bit small in the keyboard.  So I guess it'll have to be a desktop. Poo. And for what she uses it for (and with her lack of techie-ness), an Apple product isn't worth it.  I'm just tired of it crapping out after a few years.  (One of the main reasons I switched myself to Macs.)

Any thoughts?

Re: Computers for (non-techie) parent

  • I think with computers the axiom you get what you pay for is really, really true.  We've had great luck with Dell laptops.  The keyboard is actually pretty big or if she prefers to use the computer at her desk most often, set up a docking station with full size keyboard and monitor.  I just got a new laptop for Christmas, but my last Dell laptop is 8 years old and still works fine, it's just a little slow.
  • I have a Sony Vaio laptop and the keyboard is the same size as a desktop keyboard (it just doesn't have that section on the right with the 10-key number setup). I've only had it two years, so I don't have any advice on the life of it.
