"out of network" insurance question

So my H just got a new job. I SAH so his insurance covers all 3 of us. It's better insurance than where he was at, but the bad thing is that our family practice doctor, who we all 3 use as a primary care physician, is considered out of network. :(   If we stick with her, the insurance only covers a portion of our visits/services. I think it would get pricey if we continues to use her, but we love her.

I just called the dr's office to see what I could do about this and they told me to contact the insurance company to see what our options are or to even see if our doctor could be added to the network. FWIW, other doctors in her same practice/office are IN network. Frustrating!

Does anyone know anything about how this works? Am I doomed to have to choose a new doctor?

Re: "out of network" insurance question

  • You can ask the insurance company to contact her to get her in the network.  Basically the provider (your doctor) chooses whether to be in-network or not.  So it's really up to her.  Or so that's what I know, just having set up an insurance program for a portion of the employees at my work.  If she doesn't get into the network, and is considered out-of-network, you'll have to pay whatever your insurance allows, and they probably won't pay much since she isn't giving them the discounts that they want to see from those in the network.  There is always a chance that she is in a  secondary network, which still gives a discount, just usually not as high as the primary network.  Sorry, thats kind of confusing.  Basically, if your insurance company can't/won't strike a contract with her, you can either pay the price or find a new doctor:(

  • Thank you! That sucks because my husband said he already inquired and the insurance said no   :(

  • To be honest, I personally think it's her responsibility to get in the network.  But you can help it along.  Here is an excerpt from UHC's process.  I'm not sure what ins company you have, but by calling their customer service and asking how the process works, they could tell you what your doctor needs to do.  The below process then gives the number they should call, etc. but it's probably different for your company.

  • Wow, thanks! I will share w/ my H and discuss. I really appreciate it. I have been with her for 8 years and my DD has her whole life (16 months). I don't want to "dump" her!

  • I had a doctor like that too, and come to think of it, I just discussed it with her and she ended up just charging me the rates that my insurance would have charged me, because she wanted to keep my "business".  Thats always an option, too!  Sorry, I totally forgot about that.  Good luck!
