When we lived at our old house DH gave me the number for the county dispatch because there were some sketchy people that kept walking by our house, and with him working shifts, I was home alone a lot.
I've only called the number maybe 4 times in the past 5 years, but the times that I've used it have been soooo helpful.
The last time being last night.
I was leaving the mall when I saw a blind man (cane, dark glasses & all) stopped, on the road. I put on my hazards, stopped, and asked if he needed help. He told me where he was trying to get to, and he was way off, on the wrong side of the mall.
He asked me for a ride, but being it was just me & DD I was nervous about letting a strange man in the car, so I helped him off the road, pointed out a curb he could follow directly to where he needed to go. Then left.
I called dispatch, asking for an officer to please check on him. Gave the dispatcher his description, everything he had told me, etc.
Honestly, some things just didn't make sense, and part of me is wondering if it weren't a scam. I'd go into it, but it would make this post even longer.
Either way, a police officer was dispatched to check on the situation. So either:
a) some poor lost blind guy got helped, or
b) some jerk pretending to be blind to get into people's cars got caught.
Either way, I'm glad I called.
Please get the number for your county dispatch (most are listed in the phone book) & program it into your cell phones. You may not use it often, but when you need it, you'll be glad you have it.
Here are the ones I have:
