Can anyone tell me about Ottobre?

I found them on etsy and 40 patterns for about $20 sounds good to me. It's also says it's in English.

Yes/No?

Any reviews?

Re: Can anyone tell me about Ottobre?

  • I just started my subscription with the latest issue, but did borrow a couple from a really cool person I know Wink

They come in several languages, English being one of them.  You have to trace the patterns of the pattern sheets.  It looks crazy, but it is not as hard as it first looks.

You have to add your own seam allowances to the pattern.  The directions are very sparse.  I would say that you do need to have a basic understanding of garment construction since the directions do not walk you through the process (like an O+S pattern does).  The patterns are also in European sizes, so it is just a different system of sizing.

Not all 40ish patterns are available in all sizes.  The Ottobre site actually allows you to look at previous issues and has a pdf of all the designs in each issue with the sizes it comes in.

I have only made one outfit from it, but have another one cut.  The one I made was easy and worked out well.  Cmeon will surely pipe in.  She has made a few.  Also, there are several pattern reviews on patternreview.com

  • Thanks, so was it about $60 for the year (4 issues) with the subscription?

And why is their fabric so $$$ 30/meter is just crazy to me.

Yep to everything from JiL! Yes, with our current crappy $, it runs around $65 for an annual subscription of 4 kids mags (they also offer 2 adult pattern mags either with the kids or without- I have no experience with them). You also get a free gift of a past edition or one of their other pattern collections (basic tees, basic baby patterns, etc) when you buy the subscription, so it's 5 magazines, really. You also get free shipping on past editions they still have in stock- a nice savings, since shipping ran around $13 for the mag I got before I was a subscriber.

Our dollar is absolute crap right now, so their relatively expensive fabric looks insanely expensive to us. That's all I've got there. It's supposed to be great quality- but, yeah, not gonna happen for me at those prices. :)

Their patterns are generally pretty easy, IMO- you do need to understand basics, their instructions are very succinct- even bare bones in some cases- but, I've never had problems understanding them (and I've only been sewing for a year and a half). I like their fit on their more recent patterns- I have to adjust some of the older (like 3/4 years- LOL) to get the kind of fit I like on my relatively skinny kids, though, they seem to be cut pretty wide.

I really do like them, though- there are a few more back issues I want for the fall, just trying to figure out which would be the most useful. :)

  • Thanks girls, I ordered the winter/2010 one from etsy just to try it out.

Make note*don't forget the seam allowance*

Read cutting instructions first, too- they often do include seam allowances on necklines, binding pieces, and usually hems, too.
