ead1975, MrsT and anyone who has seen the new HP *SPOILERS*
What did you think?
I loved it. But I didn't reread the book before seeing it. I've read all of the other books more than once, and only read book 7 once when it first came out.
Re: ead1975, MrsT and anyone who has seen the new HP *SPOILERS*
I loved it, too. I also only read the book when it first came out, so I didn't remember a lot of the details.I think I read the last hundred pages of the book in about 20 minutes, because I was desperately trying to find out what happened, heh. I know some things were changed, but I think at least most of them worked.
And I totally cried, starting with the scene in the boathouse, and by the time they got to the forest, I was a snotty mess. (Trying to keep it vague, in case someone who hasn't seen it and hasn't read the books reads this.) My husband thought I was a lunatic, but I didn't care. And there were totally other people sniffling all around us.
We had a really good audience, too - I think maybe 3 people got up through the whole movie, and people cheered and clapped at all the right moments.
Did you see it in 3D? We went to the Imax 3d at the Common. I figured it was worth the splurge for the last one.
I added spoilers to the title so we could discuss.
I started crying during the Snape memories, and I KNEW I would cry when Harry walked into the forest- I cried reading that part so I knew the movie would get me haha
We didn't see it in 3D and our audience had a group of teenagers who talked and screamed. It was annoying.
The only big difference I noticed was the lack of Dumbledore's history.
Yeah, I knew there was more to the Dumbledore story they'd cut, especially about his sister. And I remember something about his brother and goats, but I don't remember the specifics of either, though. I may need to re-read the books.
Did you notice that young Lily had brown eyes? Three seconds after Snape talks about how Harry has his mother's eyes, they show Lily with brown eyes. I totally laughed out loud at that. I got sniffly when Snape and Dumbledore were having their talk-off in the boathouse, because I knew what was coming. The scene where he's cradling Lily's dead body got me. And oh my god, the resurrection stone scene had me bawling. I cried pretty much right on through til Harry jumped out of Hagrid's arms.
Everyone cheered when Molly killed Bellatrix, and when Ron and Hermione kissed. (Though I thought that was kind of cheesy, honestly. The giggle afterward totally felt like it was Emma and Rupert being all, "well, got that out of the way!" heh.) And, of course, when Neville was BAMF. I heart Neville. And I love that they added the bit about him and Luna.
I don't really think the 3D was that big of a deal. The opening shot of Hogwarts had dementors flying around, which was kind of cool, as was the dragon scene. And then when Voldemort died, there were flakes floating around, which was kind of lame. I was bummed we didn't get the Potter glasses, though, just the regular 3D ones. I totally would have stolen them.
There was the whole thing with Dumbledore's "friend" and his family history. They just kind of threw his brother into the movie with no warning.
I didn't notice the eye color thing, but everyone else mentioned it on the Entertainment board.
His family in the forest with him was so sad. And of course the flash backs to Lily and Harry when Voldemort was coming for them, and Lily said "Mom loves you, and Dad loves you, be strong." Gah. Tearjerker.
It was pretty grisly seeing Snape get killed, too.
I also thought the Ron/Hermione kiss was awkward.
And the Fred dying should not have been glossed over. It's like the movie barely showed it!
My husband didn't even realize that one of the twins had died. We were talking about the movie afterward, and when I said that I was crying because of Fred, he said he totally missed that one of the Weasleys had died.
I forgot about the "friend"! And I couldn't remember if Aberforth had been mentioned before.
They could have cut the Grey Lady part, or at least shortened it. It just kept going, and the freaking battle was starting! Shut up already, whiny lady, and tell him where to go!

My views of the movies are all skewed because I've never read the books.
I *loved* the movie. My favorite part was from the scene when Snape was telling the students not to help Harry and Harry stepped out to confront him until the end. The end scene (the flash forward) mad me cry
