Hi Ladies!
I origianlly posted this over on Travel, but someone suggested I post here.
I have to go to Detroit for work next week and it's been a few years since I've been out there.
Any restaurant recs or things to do? Ideally, I'm looking for non-touristy places.
I have a rental car too, so it doesn't necessarily have to be things right downtown.
Thanks!
Re: XP: Detroit recs?
Things to do:
Shopping: Somerset Collection
Go to Ann Arbor- less than an hour drive, but a great town! Check out Zingerman's deli
We have 3 casinos plus there's one in Windsor, Canada
As I think of more I'll post them.
what are you usually interested in?
food wise (what kind), art, music, sports, how many days are you in detroit (I'm assuming you are staying in a hotel downtwon)?
Food wise, I'd love anything local that's not a chain. I'm not a picky eater at all and I really love to try new things. If there's anything that Detroit's famous for, I'd love to try that too.
I'll only be there for 4 days and I'll have 2 half days to explore, but mostly my free time will be in the evenings.
Are there any cool museums worth checking out for a few hours?
Thanks again for all of your help!
Check out www.yelp.com
You can pretty much search for anything locally on the site. It's been really helpful.
You could check out the Motown Historical Museum. It's small, but cool.
The Riverfront, Greektown, Campus Martius Park is fun.
Detroit is known for it's cony dogs and you will have the unique opportunity to decide for yourself whether American or Lafayette Cony Island has the best cony dogs. They'd make a great lunch and are located in downtown Detroit at:
Lafayetter - 118 West Lafayette Boulevard
American - 115 Michigan Ave
If you like BBQ, then Slow's is the place for you: http://slowsbarbq.com/
The area around the Fox Theater, Comerica Park, Ford Field, etc. is pretty cool to visit and you can eat at the Hockeytown Cafe, Chelis, or Centaur. The first two are sports type bars and that last one is a martini and tapas place.
The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village is in Dearborn (about 20 minutes from Detroit). The Village is the largest open-air museum in the world.

Dearborn also has some of the best Middle Eastern restaurants anywhere in the US so just go to yelp and check that out if you're interested in ethnic foods.
Some more good/unique restaurants downtown (driving distance) -

and across from the Traffic Jam is this brewery

My hub's favorite restaurant -

and across the street from that is The Majestic/Magic Stick, which is a restaurant that is connected to a bar and concert/pool hall

I agree that Greektown and Slows are both great. The Detroit Zoo (actually in Royal Oak, about 20-25 minutes north of downtown) is really nice. And definitely Somerset Collection for shopping...in Troy, about a half hour north of downtown (not during rush hour, of course
