Jobs for history majors

I have my BA in History and have been working in an academic library since graduation.  I recently completed a certificate program in museum management and my goal is to be a museum curator.  However, museum jobs in my city are few and far between.  I am really burnt out by my current job and need to make more money.  I can't move because my husband is finishing up his degree.  What are some fields or areas someone with my background should look into?

Re: Jobs for history majors

  • Did you specialize in an area of history?  If teaching is not your goal, why not look into a travel agency? Or tourism bureau in your area?
  • How about management in other fields? Insurance, other non-profits, CVB... are you involved with any Youth Professionals group in Richmond? (For networking purposes.)

How much longer until DH graduates and you can move? Where do the 2 of you want to move to afterwards?

  • Have you tried the historical societies in your area? Also, check your states list of historic sites - they all maintain staff. Would you be willing to do an unpaid internship short term to network and get your foot in the door? Education would be the other that would come to mind, but that would require additional certs.

To be a curator you would be to pursue a master's or PhD in museum studies and you would want to specilize in a particular field. You would probably also need to be willing to relocate as their are only a few curators per museum. With a B.A. you can work as an archivist though so go ahead and send resumes to the places above and see it you get any interest.

  • I have a b.a in History and I am a history teacher, but I can't really recommend getting into that field right now. There are hardly any history teacher positions out there as everyone is focused on math and science right now. You are so close to so many museums in DC, I would start looking there for jobs for when your DH is done. Also, you might want to look into your masters or PhD. The federal government has some historian positions, but a lot of them want you to have at least a masters-but not all. Check out USAjobs if you are interested in a federal position(can you tell what I did all last summer when I got pinkslipped?)
  • Thanks for the feedback.  I wish we had a high speed rail system from Richmond to DC because there are all sorts of job openings in the Northern VA area.  It's not worth it to me to drive 2+ hours one way.  My husband is taking a position with Ameri Corps after graduation so we don't have the option of moving right away since his assignment is at the place where he is currently interning.  (he's going into advertising, so we're hoping this will lead to a job)

I do plan to get my master's but haven't pursued it yet because of H being in school.  So maybe once he's in his AmeriCorps position I will do that.

Not true.  I am an archivist.  With a BA you could get a job as a paraprofessional but not as a professional archivist.  In fact, most places won't even consider you if you only have a BA.  You need to go through a masters degree program in archival studies/public history, etc or get a masters of library science through a program that has intensive archives classes.  If it's something you're interested in I encourage you to look into some MA/MLIS programs.  Some universities even have dual programs as many academic archives require a MLIS and a second subject area MA.  I did my degree by going to school for 15 months & taking summer classes so it is possible to obtain a degree in a short amount of time.   Voulenteer work or a part time or paraprofessional position are things to consider if you want to further your education.  I think many archival programs would be very interested in you given the fact that you already have musuem experience.  With any luck you could get a graduate assitantship or other funding for school.

Perhaps depends on the area or organization? I have a friend whose been working as an archivist at a museum for a couple years with a B.A. I also did intern work with a historical society and the full-time archivist there had a bachelors as well.
