Seriously over drs right now!! So we had Brodys' 2 year check up today, the dr said he is way behind in speech, and suggested going to toledo hospital for an eval. and then contacting Help Me Grow. She said someone would come out and evaluate us and then he may need a special preschool as early as this fall.
I knew he was behind but everything I read about kids with medical conditions that spend alot of time in hospitals this is normal. Up till this point they had let it go and not worried about it due to his hospitalizations. I am feeling overwhelmed and upset right now. I already fear for him as far as school goes (not gonna be able to potty train well, most likely will still be in pull ups in kindergarten) I just dont want to have another label on him. Kids are mean and to put 2 labels on him will just give them more ammo to make fun of him. And I'm tired of having so many dr. visits as it is this is just gonna add a million more : (
Sorry for the vent I just am so over all of it. Wish my B could catch a break.
So does HMG really help? What should I expect?
Re: Moms with Speech issue kids....
HMG is just okay in my opinion. They are a resource for extra funding if you need help paying for things, unfortunately we don't qualify for much because it is based on income, but they have playgroups. You are not going to get speech or any other kind of therapy there as they don't provide that. You will have to go to an outpatient facility and pray your insurance covers it (most don't), but that is where HMG comes in if you qualify for their insurance they offer, if not they do have other things available to help with costs that you might be eligible for. It is worth contacting them and going through the process.
They are a good support to have and will be able to point you in a lot of directions for things.
HMG in Cuyahoga county works just like how Jill described. They still come to see A to chart how she is doing (was 1x a month, but now more like 1x every 2 months because she is doing so well). If A would have needed OT or PT, we would have had to use our insurance or pay HMG. We looked at PT for A when she was behind in walking and it was like $80/session to pay oop. A ended up pulling through, thank goodness, and we didn't end up need the PT.
We make too much money to qualify for them to pay for our speech or OT and even then, they still don't have their own speech or OT people, you have to go to an outpatient facility.
I wouldn't say I am unhappy with HMG through Lucas County, I'm indifferent. I can take them or leave them. For a low income family with special needs kids, I'm sure they are a godsend because you are going to qualify for funding, they are more of just a resource for ideas and to be in a playgroup. If Davis still has speech issues by the age of 3, they will help us through the process of going to a nursery school ran by the Sylvania School system.
You would think in the State of Ohio they would all be similiar.
I'm surprised it took you that long to get an appointment! when DH does referrals he has to have them scheduled within three days. (some insurance thing) and I thought that included HMG. Hrmm is head start similar or the same thing? Maybe I am confusing the two.
M- I know NOSLARS does stuff on your side of town. That's where DH used to work and I know most of the therapists. Their office is at Westgate but they have therapists that cover different areas. That said not sure if they would do home care cause they typically don't for kiddos. Mostly adults. They are super awesome. If you're looking for someone you should call!
The other big place is Toledo Hearing and Speech. I would say they are the two big games in town. (of course I like NOSLARS better hehe).
Thanks everyone for your input....Still not sure about what I want to do, most likely we won't qualify for help because of income so I'm not sure I want to add to the mounds of hospital bills we have out there already. I might wait it out for a bit and keep working with him. Like I said he has been talking more this past month so I think hes on his way. I am not keen on preschool at the age 2, I mean he is 2 let him be! God knows the boy is sick of drs too.
I'll make a final call in a month if there is no improvement....part of me thinks the dr was not listening to me about his improvements this past month. She kept saying he couldnt put words and ideas together (for ex. she said he cant tell you if he wants a drink, and I kept saying yes he can cause he tells me if he wants juice or milk...)
I personally think it is worth calling Monica. Don't wait and see a month, you want and see a month, then you've gotta wait even longer. If you call now, it is gonna be a month before you will even see someone from HMG, maybe longer, so call them and if you feel you don't need them, cancel it.
Also, they have several income tiers they work with, obviously, the lower you are, the more help you get. They also have assistance for people that make too high of an income, it is VERY helpful. Message me if you want to ask more questions.
Most speech and OT places work with you and give you a pretty good non-insurance rate if your insurance doesn't pay for it.
I'm emailing you.
ITA. This is what I was trying to say too...I was surprised we were approved for some of the stuff that we were approved for through EI and HMG...and the sooner you call the sooner you can start figuring out just what you need.
I was just going to say this. We used HMG(which I loved btw) for Carly's torticollis. We were seeing a PT and paying $100 bucks a pot (30-45 minute session) Ouch! Our PT and our local rehab suggested HMG to me. They came out within 2 weeks to see Carly and decided she could use the OT. THey never onced asked us for our income or any personal info for that matter.
I talked to my HMG person yesterday and she said that even though they get state and federal funding, they are a county program and that every county is different, but there is a certain set of requirements they have to meet. I told her about the playgroups and the $4k. She said we don't have the playgroups here, but they do have preschool. Cuyahoga county only gives up to $1500 and it is based on income. She about fell over when I told her you got 4k Jill! LOL. I'm glad we use HMG. They keep track of how A is doing and things we should work on next. It is a really great resource.
