I will say though that for a long time they were basically locked due to a glitch, thats why no one's was changing.
ETA: and I only have three still, WTF. I need to step up my game,clearly.
If its the same way it used to be, it has to do with where you stand among the posters. Link has the exact numbers I believe, but it's something along the lines of all boxes filled, you are one of the top 25 or 50 posters on the board. Only one empty box, top 100 posters, etc. That's why they change.
So someone conceivably could have 50,000 posts and no boxes filled in if they haven't posted anything in a few weeks I guess.

If you scroll over the boxes on a poster that has one like Daisy, it tells you what category of contributor they are. So one box = top 500.
Thanks my dear!! Big brother watches at work too much these and thus I shall never have a box.
