Having a joint birthday party for 2 kids - Help with planning!

Cam's birthday is a week before Maya's, so it just makes sense to have their parties together.  We will have a few people at our house for Cam's "actual" 1st birthday, but their party will be the weekend of Maya's birthday.

I'm planning a cheerleading/sports themed party.  Maya loves cheerleading, dancing, pom poms, etc. and someone on here posted a link to a cute blog that was something like "Cam's rookie year" (thanks to whoever that was!) so I thought this would be a cute way to combine things.

Would you put this all on one invitation or put 2 invitations in one envelope?  I know this is silly, but I don't want Cam to grow up and look back at things like he missed out on stuff that Maya had.  For example, I've always designed invitations for Maya's parties and they are in her baby book.  Am I too paranoid and thinking too hard about this if he has the same invitation as his sister?    Again, silly I know!

Also, I'm trying to figure out how to do cakes.  Should I do 2 separate cakes?  A cake with both names?  A cheerleading cake for Maya, a smash cake for Cam, and cookies in shapes of sports balls?  What are your thoughts or other ideas?  I know we have some creative girls on here, so I'm open to your suggestions!

  • I probably would do 2 invites (one envelope) for this year just because it is his first, that way you have something to put in his baby book.  But for future years you could do combined.  But CUTE theme!!!!

As far as cakes...I would do one cake and a smash cake.  Then as they get older maybe 2 different cakes (unless they can compromise on a theme but that is normally pretty rare in my experience!)

  • Here's what I did. I made cupcakes for the girls instead of cakes this year. I did teacups for Katen (her theme was tea party) and farm animals for Ana. That way it was easy to have both without buying two separate cakes, which would be too much cake for our family who doesn't really even like cake.lol!

I decorated each side of our room in a separate theme and split the dining room table down the middle.

I did one invitation. It had a diagonal line across it. Both sides were different colors with a picture of each girl alone and things from their theme surrounding them.

I think especially with a little boy, he won't worry about the details or having his own separate invitation, etc. With girls, I could be in trouble but I do plan to have separate parties once Katen gets into Kindergarten.

Hope that helps a little bit. Have fun planning! It sounds so cute!

Thanks!  I was thinking the same thing for invites - doing 2 this special year, then combining in the future, but DH thought I was over-thinking it.

And I'm taking advantage of being able to theme their party this year while Cam is so little.  I'm not crossing my fingers that this will last!

  • The theme is so cute and how neat that it will work awesome for both of them.

I'm on the same page as smtaylor. I'd do two in one envelope just because its his 1st and that way you have an individual one for his scrapbook. I'd also do a smash cake for him and the big cake for M.

With my girls I have done cupcakes and I have also done two separate cakes. With the separate cakes I did them each as a single 9 in round layer so I didn't have more than one full cake total but each girl got her own individual cake decorated.

  • I would design one invite for both kids and send that to everyone and then just do a single invite of just Cam and a single one of Maya for the baby books.

PS-I love the rookie year idea.  I probably would have used it if we had kept Quincy.  The girls could have been his cheerleaders!  Awww....

Momma to 2 sweet girls here on earth and a precious baby boy in heaven
  • Oooooh....cupcakes are a good idea too!  Decisions...decisions...

  • Love your idea!!

I would do 2 invites, but I am really worried about equality.

I'd do a big cake for DD and smash cake for DS, or just cupcakes for both.

Can't wait to see the pics!

  • that was me who posted the link. (included below again as well)

even though no kids yet, i would do 2 invites of some sort even if they were front/back somehow...

i love the cupcake idea...and you could do different sports - ie. soccer balls, basketballs, baseballs, etc. if you wanted to do cookies in sports shapes/themes you could wrap them in cellophane and tie them with a ribbon and hand them out as favors.

  • Super cute idea!

If it were me I think I would do 2 invites.  Like others have suggested you could possibly do a front and back.  I like the cupcake idea too.  Since it is Cam's first birthday I would still do a smashcake.

Have fun planning! I can't wait to see how it turns out.

  • You are doing a Cyclone theme along with this, yes?  hehe  :)

Um, YES!  I'm looking for an ISU cheer uniform for Maya and some kind of jersey for Cam.  Everything will be Cyclone colors :)

We found a 12 month ISU cheer outfit at TJ Maxx that was super cute!  Also, there is a place in Merle Hay that has a bit of baby ISU gear (also in Valley West), but can't think of the names.
