Shattered sliding glass door

Long story short, DH was mowing last week and a rock hit our sliding glass door in the perfect spot.  Of course it started to 'spider web' and now it's completely shattered.  Our sliders are double paned (as I imagine all sliders are these days), so thankfully the inside pane is still intact.  We called around to see if just the shattered piece of glass can be replaced and were quoted at $600.  At that price, we might as well file a claim with the insurance and pay the $1000 deductible for a brand new door.

Does anyone have any recommendations for glass repair people?  We want a few more estimates before making our decision.  We're located in White Marsh.  TIA!

  • That sucks!  I hope that it doesn't have to be an expensive replacement for you.

I'm not sure if they handle this kind of stuff or not but Clearview Windows and Doors recently did some replacements in my parents house and they were really thrilled with their service and prices.

  • I've used Bel Air Glass before and they were reasonable and did a good job.

I agree on getting the new door because even if you fix the glass, you could still experience issues with it down the road.

  • Thanks for the input ladies!

  • I worry about this every time DH cuts the grass!!!  I would also get a new door....  esp since it's double paned.  I would worry about water/leaking between the glass later on.

  • maybe I'm too conservative, but I always understood that you really don't want to use your homeowners for anything minor like this because after a few claims they are bound to cancel you (I may be drinking the insurance myth koolaid though)

I do believe that is true, but they may run this damage under a different aspect of HOI (sort of like comprehensive vs collision on a vehicle).  I'm not totally positive.  I know my H did that to a customers house and we were going to pay out of pocket for it, then we were told my our INS that they classify that in a different category so it didn't increase our rates nor go against us, per se.

  • Good news!  DH called Ryan (the builder of our house) to ask for a recommendation.  Ryan informed us that it's under warranty still and they'll replace the entire door for free!!!!

Thanks again for all the input.

  • That is great that they'll replace it. This just happened to our friends 2 weeks ago, except they have no idea how it happened. It literally just burst. My H thought the heat and condinsation, but who knows.
