What should the punishment be?

On the news last night they said those 2 boys involved in that park incident were released but will have a tracking device. Parents are obviously mad that they are being released at all.

I'm curious, what do you think their punishment should be? And I'm asking this more of if this was your child who did the crime, not who was the victim. If you found out your 13 your old did something like this how would you react?

Re: What should the punishment be?

  • If it were my kid doing such awful things I'd want them held in detention.  Yeah, it would suck but it's worse, IMO, to have them living with relatives knowing what the community thinks. I also think being in detention would provide a stronger consequence.

  • I'd cut their peters off!  If you can't use it the way it was intended to be used...you just shouldn't have it.  In all seriousness though, I think that they should definitely be held in a youth correctional facility or something like that.  The consequence would definitely be worse there...or they should have to wear a sign everywhere they go that says they molest little kids.

I first typed out "Well, after I beat the *** out of them...."  That is never acceptable...NEVER.

Wait, what's never acceptable?  Beating the $hit out of them, or cutting off their peters?

Personally, I feel this is the kind of situation that castration was meant for...  that and lifelong monitoring.

Molesting a kid is never acceptable. That's what I was referring to.  I'd be ok with castration for people who molest/rape/etc. I think it's underused

As for the punishment - I would say they first need to be evaluated by a therapist and get into some sort of therapy. I'm going to assume both of these kids have some things in their background or some issues that they need to deal with. Perhaps have them be in an inpatient facility where they can get the help they obviously need. Yes, a youth detention center or something would also be appropriate in my mind.

I agree with Tera. Something gave these children --- yes, they are still children --- the idea that doing this was funny/acceptable/a good idea. They need inpatient treatment. I don't know what their family life is like --- but if it is what put this idea in their heads in the first place, then putting them back there isn't a good decision.

I don't know that I totally agree with this with respec to assuming the kids had something in their background that lead/contributed to this behavior.  As much as I might like to think that's usually the case, it's also very possible (and very scary to think) that these boys did not have some sort of parental or other influence - or past experience - which contributed to sexually assaulting a child.

With the caveat that I know nothing about these boys or their families, sometimes kids from perfectly normal homes can do really atrocious things.  I'm not sayingthat they don't need to be in a detention center or need some sort of "help", though.

I don't know what the punishment should be but I hope it would be in the form of some sort of counseling/rehab/whatever to help them see that what they did was REALLY wrong.

I saw this in the Journal Star.

In this case a 19 year old groped a 14 year old and got 300 days in jail. I guess on the range of "bad things," groping someone comes in a bit lower than the crap that happened in Omaha at that neighborhood park with the brother and sister. I know you can't really compare, but that's all i can really do since I have no experience (and hope to never have any experience) with this. I guess if that guy got 300 days then the ones in Omaha would get more than that. I don't know. I'm glad I don't have to make those decisions. That's hard and there are just so many emotions behind it. It's sad all around.
