a field that they didn't go to school for (or initially set out to be in)?
Jason and I are starting to think about life outside of education but making the transition to something other than what we had our hearts set on is depressing.
Has anyone had experience making the switch? Are you happy? Do you have any regrets?

Re: Is anyone working in...
I don't, but I did want to ask you - are you still restricted geographically? I get notices for higher ed jobs and I saw a post yesterday that looks perfect for you but it is nowhere near PA/OH.
Having spent more than 3 years in the higher ed job market, I know all too well that part of the game may be willing to move anywhere.
2012 Reading Challenge
I don't do anything related to my degree. My degree was international studies focusing in security issues and I work in government contracts. Also my DH has his MA in International Relations and he is now doing Project Management for a government project. He is looking at going back to the international arena, he did work and live abroad before we started dating. He misses that aspect of work and doesn't find his current job that fulfilling.
I think I have stated before that I am not thrilled with my job. But I don't ever see me doing anything with my degree. I would need more experience abroad and master's degree to really do something in that field. The nice thing is that have a gained a good number of transferrable skills if I wanted to take a paycut and go in another direction I have great experience that would allow me to do that.
everything becky said
I get notices all the time for jobs I think would fit for you here!
I don't think you should give up on dreams, even though it is tough, unless you've exhausted options (if geography means you have, then that is different).
I go through periods where I'm open to a move, but at the end of the day, I don't think I'm capable of moving away from the area. I know that practically kills our search, but I'm not sure what would convince me to check out other regions.
I also feel like at this point I'd be willing to look into other part time jobs if it meant that Jason could continue pursuing teaching (looking like some more subbing for next year). What's making it difficult too is I think Jason's at whit's end about living with his parents... so he goes back and forth about going a different direction occupationally if it means we can move out.
So we weigh moving out and going a different way with jobs, or we stick it out.
*side note* Got an email about a job I applied to in June about a position being put on hold because of freezes. I'm pretty sure I hate Tom Corbett.
I am. I work for the federal government, in an office setting. I went to school to be a high school teacher.
I regret that I never was able to find a teaching job, but I earn about double the salary, so I can't complain at all.
