I'm back from vacay - and SOOO glad.
These big family vacations get harder every year. Honestly, they are not relaxing - its stressful having 12+ in one house, undercurrent of tension all the time. DD has a great time playing w/ her cousins, but the rest of it - bleh - NOT FUN. We have another one w/ them in November around Thanksgivng. I think it would cause a HUGE rift if we skipped, so its not really worth it.
I took yesterday and Monday off to relax and do some stuff around the house. I'm glad to have this short week.

It's nice to have you back. Sorry to hear about your tension-filled vacation.
It's been booooooorrrrrrring here.

Ugh- I am sorry that your trip wasn't more fun.
Do you think that the accomodation had anything to do with it? Did the house have more than one great room/hang-out area?
This post is making me dread my upcoming trip to visit my IL's.
This is my line!
I'll do a brief recap - the house was big enough - 6 bedrooms, 4 up, 2 down. We got there later than everybody else b/c DD needed to nap (which actually involved violent howling while we drove around in the car trying to lull her to sleep). By the time we got there, the rooms had been doled out - we got a downstairs room w/ 2 double beds and its own bathroom. We had to squeeze DD's rental crib in the room too. There was no furniture in the room except the beds, one night stand and 2 smallish side chairs - i.e. we couldn't unpack anywhere. My SIL decided that downstairs was best for us b/c it was away from all the loud kids. Meanwhile, all teh other adults got rooms queen or king beds. So, DH and I had slept in separate beds the whole week.
I can kinda see SIL's point of putting us away from the older kids, but the problem w/ the room was that the house had hardwood floors and all the kids basically ran around and slammed doors constantly and were jumping in there rooms, etc. and that all echoed down to our room. The biggest issue though was that people (and especially the kids wouldn't STFU) for 30 minutes so I could put E down for bed, I totaly gave up on naps and just drove her around and then read my book. It took 2 hours to get her down one night and finally DH lost it and yelled at the kids - after we'd spoken w/ everybody about it, etc. And, its not like I'm putting her down at 6 pm or something. Its 8-8:30, etc., I dont' think its that much for the kids to just keep it down. Anyway - after G yelled at the kids his brother was pissed at him and asked him to apologize to the kids for yelling. Meanwhile, SIL was all drunk and jokingly yelled at DD instead of her own kids (DD lost it and got totally upset about it, etc.) but I didn't make a big stink about it to SIL at all. Another night, everyone watched Wipe Out on the TV in the living room and laughing very loudly/talking back, etc. I finally just gave up on bed time and came out w/ DD to watch the rest of the show and make a point.
Ugh - and the whole thing is awkward anyway b/c BIL insists on paying for the house/vacation, which seems generous, but it actually just makes it more and more like "their" vacation and I feel like an outsider on my own vacation. I would LOOOVE to pay our share, but anytime we try, we get refused. Its just a weird vibe. We tried to pay for a big group dinner and were told no, thanks.
I'm sorry your vacation didn't go well. This will make me think twice about renting a big house with family. We did it when we were growing up but that's when all the kids were close in age. I like my vacations now to be just us and quiet.
hahah it's so true!

Awwww K, I'm sorry it wasn't what you anticipated. When we went to Disney in May we were supposed to go with my SIL and her family but luckily it didn't work out. It wwouldve been a disaster. The more people, the more problems.
I hope you guys can have a nice weekend together!!!
