If your flight leaves at 6:30 am...?

Arrrggghh.

Normally if I fly on a Monday I try to give myself a decent flight time because Monday is a notoriously busy day for business travelers and I want to be at the airport early enough to fight crowds without waking up at the 3 in the morning to do so.

Well lucky me, in order to make it to a meeting on time I have to take the 6:30 am flight.

So yeah, what time would you be at the airport for a 6:30 am flight?  I guess this is assuming you gals fly out of DSM often.  Do you think 5 am is sufficient enough?  I have no idea what the airport traffic looks like that early (and for good reason!).

  • I've traveled on Monday's before (generally to the dreaded O'Hare - yuck).  If it were me - I'd be there at 5:00.

Don't forget about the Fleur Drive detour - that could potentially add 20(ish) minutes to your trip, especially at that time of day.

  • I always leave Johnston at 4:40 for a 6:30 flight which gives me about 15 minutes sitting at the gate.

Oh yes.  I was just at the airport this Monday too and found 63rd to Park and then up Fleur was not pleasant... so perhaps I'll try bypass this time??

ETA - ha!  Dreaded O'Hare indeed!  I loathe that airport.  This time the layover is in Detroit, so at least that's something to look forward to ;)

Wow, so it actually cuts it a lot closer than I thought.  But thank you!  Good to know.

  • I think getting there between 5-5:30 should be just fine. I'd take the by-pass- Fleur can be a PITA with all the stop lights and also the detour

  • I actually LOVE 6:00 flights!! They almost never have any delays because the "day hasn't happened yet" to cause any :)

We fly a few times a year and always select the 6am option.  With that said, I usually get there about 1 hour - 1 hour 15 min prior to flight time and have time to get a bagel and eat it, with time to spare!

  • Do you have to check luggage?  If not, check in online the night before and print your boarding pass there.  Then just head straight to security and go through with your carryon.  This will save you some time and you should be fine showing up at 5:00am (when I would be at the airport, not leaving the house).

  • lol I'm from the NYC/NJ market ... where it really is a necessity to be extra early at the airport.

In DM ... if I'm carry-on then I generally arrive about 45 minutes before departure. ESPECIALLY for an early morning flight. IMO DSM is NOT a busy airport lol

If I'm checking - I arrive about 75 minutes before departure.

    If I'm flying with DS/family - I arrive 90 minutes before departure.

Most of this comes from experience, monthly and greater amounts of flying including with child - I tend not to get too crazy about getting there early.
