Apple fans come in! Need advice please

I'd like to surprise my h with an iPod or iTouch for Christmas.  He still uses his cd player when he goes on business trips (how old school!).  He's going on more trips now, especially international. My iPod is ancient and I don't think it works anymore.  He wants to be able to listen to his music and not drag around cd's.

So he loves the iPhone.  I think he drools a little bit everytime he sees one.  But we can't get it since we are with Verizon and we'd like to stay with them. The fee is also a little expensive for us.  He likes the email, calendar, and game functions as well as being able to surf the internet (and of course listening to music).  We have very simple phones. So my questions are:

1. What do you think of the iTouch?  What are your experiences/what have you heard?  Is the 8GB too small?  The 32 GB is more than I want to spend. Is there a monthly fee to use it?  I can't find that info on the internet.

2. Or do I get him get him the regular iPod?  Is there a reason why this is a better product when the iTouch has more functions?

3. Any other tips/advice?

Thanks for your help!

  • The iPod Touch is awesome. ?I highly recommend it, and 8 gigs is pretty decent. ?No monthly fee. ?The Wifi is really cool, and the design is awesome. ?

  • I think if you have really simple phones, the iTouch would make a nice gift. I don't have one, but I would appreciate having the all the applications handy, plus entertainment, plus a way to get online. 8 GB sounds pretty good. That's too bad they don't have slots for something like an SD card for expanding storage. I'm sure that's on purpose so you feel like upgrading sooner Stick out tongue
  • Thanks for your responses and I'm glad to hear the 8 GB is good! I think my h will be really excited!

  • iTouch sounds perfect, it's essentially the iPhone w/o the phone, and since you want to stay on Verizon and don't want the data plan fees, it's just right for your h.

I haven't heard anything about any plans or fees, I think it just works on WiFi, not cellular data networks? If that's the case, there wouldn't be any fees, you'd just hook onto your WiFi at home/work or wherever it's free.

I have an iPhone, and I can see it being plenty useful w/o celullar access if it wasn't my phone. It would probably mean I couldn't lurk the nest at stoplights, that's about it :)

  • I would recommend the 16GB; you can fill 8 fairly easy.  Also, you can load TV shows and movies and watch those on it (they take up more space).  No fees for it, it works on any WiFi network you can log onto.

Thanks!  I'll take that into consideration.

  • I have the  8GB ipod touch and I LOVE it!

You might also want to check out the new ipod nano if you don't need the WiFi feature. I just got it for DH for his birthday and he LOVES it. It has great features..he plays games on it and watches movies in addition to having all his music.
