are you getting ANY response when you apply?

I've working in my industry close to 10 years (including 8 years at my current company).  I've been looking for a new job for a few months.

Trying to be open minded, I have applied to dozens of jobs not just in my field, but in multiple other industries.

I've noticed for the 50 or so jobs (or resumes I've sent blindly to companies with no positions posted) in industries OTHER than mine, over 50% of time I receive SOME acknowlegement of receipt of my resume/cover letter, if only a "we would like to confirm receipt of your resume/cover letter" E-mail or postcard.  I've also gotten interviews at 2 different companies.

BUT for the 80 or so jobs in my current industry that I've applied to. I've received NOTHING.  I might have received 1 or 2 automatic response E-mails, but I can't even remember if that was part of this current job search, or at some point in the past.

So I'm curious, nesties currently looking for a job, what's your experience been like?  Do you usually receive some sort of acknowledgement that your resume was received?  Or nothing at all?

Re: are you getting ANY response when you apply?

  • Rarely do I receive anything. I usually have gotten a call for an interview or once in a while from bigger companies I will get a letter saying we got your app but went with someone else.

DH got really frustrated when he was job hunting because he would sit and wait to hear back when he really wanted a job. It is hard but just keep applying everywhere. I didn't even want my job when I applied for it bc I didn't care for the description but it ended up being a really good job. And once I got hired I got like 6 phone calls that week from companies wanting to set up interviews - of course! But I ignored them since I had just gotten hired.

  • No, not really.  The interviews I've had have been the result of working with recruiters.  It's annoying honestly.
