First, I feel like a loser for not knowing your actual first name.
Second, I saw in your Borders thread that you went to Guatemala. What was the purpose of the trip? Where in the country did you go? I hope you don't mind me asking--I used to live there! :-)
ETA: I just read the WFD thread and saw that your name is Hannah (smacks forehead).
"You're the L and the V, I'm the O and the E...Am I speaking clearly?"
Re: ***hz80408***
No worries, it's Hannah, and you're Joni right?
I didn't realize that! I went to Guate in 2009 for about 2 weeks through Habitat for Humanity (/Global Village techinically for the international trip). I went with a group through my university and I actually convinced my dad to come too.
We helped two families in the Puerto Barrios area, so we stayed there for I think 10 days if I remember right and then we travelled a bit. I can't remember the name of where we stayed when we left Puerto Barrios but we took a ferry to get there. Then we went up Rio Dulce and evenually made our way to Anitigua for a few days.
We unfortunately didn't go to Lake Izabel but we did do a day trip and hiked up Pacaya Volcano. It was awesome!
Both my dad and I loved it!! We've actually considered trying to get our family to do a 4 day trip back to just Guate City and Antigua area; there always seem to be travelzoo packages there!
This is the only pic I have on my work computer, but it's at Pacaya:
Where did you live, for how long and why? Curious!

Yes, I'm Joni. :-)
That sounds like it was an awesome trip! I went to Rio Dulce a number of times when I lived there to visit some friends who were starting up an orphanage. For a while, they actually lived in a simple house on Lake Izabal, and their kitchen and dining area were literally part of a dock that extended over the water. They would set up a hammock on the dock, or I would lay out on it by the water. I always felt like I was on vacation when I went to see them. Antigua is such a charming place. I never got around to hiking up one of the volvanoes, unfortunately.
I lived in San Cristobal, Alta Verapaz--about 4 hours north of Guatemala City in the mountains. I was there for five years. I taught English to mostly elementary students for the first four years and spent the last year doing more behind-the-scenes type stuff for the school and the ministry I worked with. While in Guatemala, I was able to go to Tikal (so cool), Semuc Champey, Panajachel, Lake Atitlan, and a few other places. I also went to El Salvador to visit friends 4 times and did quick trips each to Belize and Honduras. I have been back to visit a couple times, but it was mostly just to visit where I used to live. Now that I'm married, Felix and I plan to go there so he can see where I lived and meet some of the people I know there. We're shooting for June 2012.
Wow, that sounds amazing!! I'm jealous!
I wish we would have gone to Tikal. We saw some smaller ruins, but Tikal would be been awesome!
