Where do you get your furniture?

DH and I are in serious need of some new furniture. We went shopping this weekend and did not find anything we love. I?m looking specifically for a new bedroom set and dining set.

We tried Star, Ashley, and I?ve looked on line at Rooms to go and the room store.

Any ideas would be great. Thanks!

Re: Where do you get your furniture?

  • Is there a specific style you are looking for?

I was at Star, Gallery, Star Clearance Center (by Gallery), and Bel Clearance (at Greenspoint Mall) this weekend.

We're going to check the big R2G out by Katy, and the new(-ish) Ashley furniture clearance center on 45-N in Spring (??) sometime.

  • Most of our furniture is from Bassett.  It is really good quality and they often have sales.
  • Mostly Ethan Allen, Louis Shanks, and Bassett right now.  Some other girls here have had horrible EA experiences, but we've had good service from the north freeway location.  They even loaned us a sofa from their clearance section until ours came in.  I think the Shanks showroom on Fondren (used to be Suniland) is way better than the one on the north freeway.

I'm also lusting after an Eames lounge chair at Design Within Reach.  Our dining room set is from World Market, and while I like it and think it's good quality, it's too big for our dining room so I'll probably sell it and get something else.

  • Since we moved here we have brought things from Crate and Barrel. Im pretty sure they had some nice dining tables.

There were some nice bedroom sets at Danish Inspirations but we werent looking for them... but they were reasonably expensive. But are modern and solid wood.

We have brought cheaper things from ikea in the past... but they generally dont last multiple moves, and since we move fairly regularly we wanted something a bit more solid.

  • We got our bedroom set from Fingers (did they reopen?)
  • Our bedroom is from Macys

Our Couches are from Gallery (we never thought we'd ever buy something there, but we found the perfect couches there)

Our kitchen table (that is large and would also serve as a nice dining table) is from pottery barn.

Our big chair and a half + ottoman is from Bartholet Home Furnishings between The Woodlands and Conroe

Another place to try is Laurie's in Tomball

It's in River Oaks and it is awesome. We have gotten a few things there.

I really like Fingers, had a great experience buying a dresser from there.

  • If you are picking up a lot of furniture, I would encourage you to consider going to North Carolina to buy it.  A lot of the furniture makers still manufacture furniture there, and you can get some really good prices.  For example, we purchased our bed and armoir from the Thomasville outlet store near Hickory, NC, and were able to save over $3000.  (the set at the store would have cost $5000 brand new, but the same set at the outlet cost $1600, including shipping)  I think the furniture maker that makes a lot of pieces for Pottery Barn and Willams Gold is also in that area.  (but I forget the name...I just know that the company made the leather recliners that we purchased from Pottery Barn)  You will also find discount stores for Bassett, Broyhill, etc. in that area.

We used to see really great deals at the Pottery Barn outlet in San Marcos, but those have fallen off since they opened up the bigger store.  It can be hit or miss.  But it's worth dropping by the furniture outlet stores in San Marcos if you are in the area.  (there is also a Restoration Hardware and Crate & Barrel outlet stores)  If you know a Pottery Barn/Crate & Barrel/Restoration Hardware style that you like, then you might want to start stalking the Austin Craigslist and ebay listings.  The sellers on those sites are close enough that they can find the really good deals at the outlet stores that can be hard to catch.  I have picked up a couple of pieces that way as well.

If you don't mind the hunt, be sure to pop into antique and specialty stores around town.  We have found some gorgeous and unique pieces that way.  For example, they have some really cool recycled wood pieces at Texas Tuscan Furniture, and some cool rustic pieces at Cierra Interiors.

If you don't mind searching while you're on the road, there are some amazing local stores in the Hill Country.  (particularly places like Fredericksburg and Gruene).

    Good luck with your search!

  • We took a vacation to North Carolina last time we made a major furniture purchase - all of our bedroom furniture from Thomasville. Pretty sure we are going to do the same for living room furniture soon because I am having no luck finding what I want here. There is a Pottery Barn sectional that is looking promising, but i'll probably still hold off and try to locate in in North Carolina.
