XP: short getaway

I posted this on the travel board, but figured I'd try here as well because some of you may know more local ideas:

DH and I want to do a quick 2 or 3 night getaway for our anniversary the beginning of August.  We are looking for somewhere that is more about relaxing than sightseeing, etc.  DH's major requirement is that wherever we go have a pool (preferably a "cool one"...his words) and I'd like somewhere romantic where we can maybe go to some cute little shops, but basically just really laid-back.  We're thinking between $500-1000 for the trip (we are willing to drive or fly although driving is preferred at this point, we live in central PA).  Some of the areas we've been looking at are Finger Lakes area or the coastal regions of NJ, MD or DE.  We had thrown around the idea of Vegas (lounging by the pool by day, catching a show/nice dinner at night), but I'm starting to think that is going to be hard to do within our budget.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks!!

  • Have you checked out Groupon getaways? Sometimes they run good deals in an area you may be interested in.

  • I was going to suggest the Finger Lakes.  It's about a 4 1/2 hour drive for me and I was looking at a cabin rental ( http://www.highcountryacres.com/index.html )  to help with costs because it has a kitchen to cook some meals there instead of going out.  I'm planning something similar for the end of September.  As for a pool, you'll just have to research online for what campgrounds have a pool if thats the route you want to take.  I also LOVE the Saratoga Springs, NY area.  I went there last year (although the drive was long...6 1/2 hours) for a girls weekend & a concert.  They have an open-air farmers market that is open only on weekends and so many local vendors on display (if your into that kinda of thing..I am!). It's historic with lots of little shops in town. Have fun!!

  • Bedford Springs Hotel and Golf/ Spa resort would fit the bill for relaxing and a cool pool--its filled with natural spring water. However, the town itself is a "blink or you'll miss it" type place so its probably more of an overnight trip than a multiple day trip--unless you made it a stop on the way to pittsburgh.  DH and I spent one of our anniversaries in Providence/Newport RI and it was awesome. They do a "firewater" festival throughout the summer where they float small bonfires on the river that goes through the downtown and there is live music and gondola rides. They also have a huge mall downtown, several shops and museums and local attractions and a water taxi that takes you to Newport which is a great small town with its own set of attractions as well.

  • St Michaels is super close, and super cute!   I'm sure there are nice hotels there with cool pools.  If not, i'm sure theres one close by.  I've heard nothing but good things about it.   Atlantic City is also like Vegas... amazing pools & hotels... you can see a show at night.   And while the beach is dirty, atleast there is one.   LOL

    Good luck.

  • Did you look into the Poconos? I was looking there for an anniversary trip for DH and I and they had some nice looking resorts. It's only about 3 hours from State College which is nice.
