pregnancy/insurance questions

Is anyone in H.R.?  If so, I could use some advice. Here is the situation:

- found out I am 9 weeks pregnant

- start a new job at the end of august (by then will be about 13 weeks)

- current student insurance ends in august, but since i got pregnant before    plans ended, i am covered for duration of the pregnancy (until march)

- current student insurance only allows basic coverage will not cover a c-section. also since I am graduating I can not upgrade to the plan that will cover a c-section.

- have yet to tell future employer about pregnancy since have not started, but they do offer insurance and i have until Oct. to enroll

- my husband's plan also offers insurance that i can enroll in, but my plan appears to be better

what would you do?

  a. tell future manager about pregnancy now and then talk to h.r.

  b. talk to h.r. directly now without telling manager (it is a small company so I am hesitant about doing this)

  c. wait until after starting job to tell manager and then talk to h.r.

  d. enroll under husband's plan

also, i know it varies but is pregnancy generally seen as a pre-existing condition?

Re: pregnancy/insurance questions

  • If you were covered when you got pregnant, it should not be considered a pre-existing condition when you change insurance providers unless you have a lapse in coverage. But I'd double-check - pregnancy is handled differently by many providers.

I'm not sure what you're going to "talk" to your manager and/or HR about at this point. They don't need to know you're pregnant if the insurance covers it. Do they have benefits documentation in place? A bigger concern would be maternity leave - at most places, you wouldn't be eligible.

  • Pregnancy isn't considered a pre-existing condition (as in, it won't mean they won't cover you) as long as you don't have a lapse in coverage. Since you currently have student coverage and are getting coverage either through your work or your DH's work, you should be fine. You can always contact the companies that cover both workplaces and talk to a rep directly.

Can you choose an option of going on your DH's plan until October when your open enrollment is?

    Congrats on the pregnancy!

I work at one of the larger health insurance companies... If you would be going on to your DH's group policy, pregnancy (most likely) will not be considered pre-x.

If it's a group, fully insured plan pre-x cannot be applied, there's a federal mandate again applying pre-x, there has been for quite some time, it's not only due to new healthcare reform...

However, some of the health care reform does go into effect in Sept.

Also, as long as you do not have a break in coverage of 63 days or more, pre-x cannot be applied. As Dr.L said, you'll be fine since you already have coverage.

You can also have DH call his insurance company and ask about maternity benefits... he doesn't HAVE to tell them you're already pg. ie, my wife & I are thinking about having a baby, I'm calling to find out about benefits... are there any waiting periods, separate deductibles, ect.... he can ask anything he wants about his policy. You can be added due to a qualifying event (loss of your student coverage)
