Car idling laws

DH was sitting in the car with the a/c on the other day waiting for me to pick him up (he had to leave his car at work).  I told him not to do that and that there are laws against it.. but then I looked up laws for NYS and the only thing I can find is for large vehicles/diesel etc.  Also in NYC there are laws against idling outside of schools (any size vehicle).

I thought I had heard someone tell me that in their state in the Northeast, that you couldn't leave your car idling for more than 5 minutes.

Any thoughts, or know what your state's rules are?  I mean I think it would be great, obviously depends on the circumstances (emergencies etc), but no one seems to even know about these laws anyway..

Re: Car idling laws

  • I've only heard of laws for long haul trucks.  I have occasionally seen "rules" or signs for no idiling for cars, like in Yosemite, but very rarely.

Me, too.  I've never looked into it, but now i might... at/on ferries and waiting for open bridges are the two places i often see signs about it.

  • Interesting.  I found this while searching for my state.  Seems like my state has the laws, but stupid "exemptions."  One of them listed is heating and cooling.

My primary vehicle is a Prius, so when I stop, my engine shuts down.  However, this weekend we went to a festival in our Xterra where we were stuck in line to get in for hours and I was amazed at the number of people who left their cars running the entire time.  It's not that difficult to start your car back up to move 3 feet every 15 minutes.

  • I am a lurker but I know that last year Connecticut passed this as a law for all vehicles (the 5 minute law) - under a green initiative.  NYS may not have passed it yet?  Is there a way to see if it is pending legislation?
