Toddler bed ?

When did you move to a toddler bed?

We are probably moving back home and I don't want to keep Sam in the pack n play, especially since DH fell into it yesterday and bent the side and it doesn't fully stand up.

I don't know whether to get another crib one for Luke and put Sam in Luke's old crib. So far he's not jumping out of the crib and I'm way too scared to try a toddler bed right now, but he is getting up there.

Thanks!

PS. I'd probably get a convertible anyway, so when it was time I could just convert it. But is it worth it?

Re: Toddler bed ?

  • Hope the move back home means something good. Seems like most kids start trying to get out on their own and that's when parents change them. I've known people to switch them over earlier though b/c of a sibling needing the crib and the kids have done fine. They just got a bed with rails. Luke is nearing 2 so could be worth it. This is why we're trying to wait for number 2, thought of another crib makes me cringe and we didn't even buy this one! Goodluck!

You could technically put a mattress on the floor too-- I know a few people who do that.
  • We started with a mattress on the floor when Owen was 1 year and 9 months.  His bed finally arrived sometime a month or so later, just after Ellie was born.  We've had no problems with the transition.

  • We actually switched Eli today. Well his crib converts to a toddler bed, but we took the front off and put on the toddler rail. We were waiting for him to climb out, but decided to go for it today. Main reason was that I am home for another month and will have more time to deal with it. We are in the midst of nap #1 and it's going okay. Rough at first but his is in the bed laying down (thank you video monitor!), so I'll take it!

  • We switched them after they started climbing out of the PNPs in DC and then their cribs once we got home... it was a rough transition for us and it continues to be considering they are back in PNPs at camp and can climb out of them.... I have found that being super quiet, not saying anything when they get out of bed, just bringing them straight to bed works best... rather than giving into the frustration and talking to them...

  • Oh God I'm scared. Most nights are good, Luke realizes its bedtime and goes down, but we have some bad nights and I just don't think he realizes he could try to get out of bed. The PNP he's gotten out of, and he was not impressed how it hurt.

I think we'll wait it out.

Abby's going to be a mess, too.  Someone recommended getting a dog bed from the e-store.  I chuckled and then realized they were serious.  We were talking about  her sleeping in our room with a/c on the super hot nights.  We are crappy parents and only have one a/c.  :-)

Oh hellz no! Buying DD an air conditioner for her bedroom was not negotiable in this house. Plus, Sanford is hotter than where you live. But still...there will be no bedroom sharing here.

We moved DD to her toddler bed at 2-1/2. She did fine with the transition at first. Now she frequently gets up and pulls books into her bed when she's supposed to be going to sleep but eventually she conks out.
