Flight discounts?

Do any airlines give military discount, or are military families able to fly free somehow? I knew an air force girl who always flew her son and husband free all around the world, but idk how to go about that. TIA.

Re: Flight discounts?

  • She probably flew him around via Space A.  Some airlines do give a military discount, but only for the SM.  The rate is usually higher than what you can get on a site like Tavelocity or Priceline.

Southwest offers a military discount for anyone with a military ID (sponsor or dependent). You have to call and book through the phone in order to use it and sometimes the internet only deals are better, but sometimes the military discount is better.

Delta also does this. H and I have always used them for our flights and we always get the best prices from them. You'll have to call their number and ask for the military line.

I knew a lot of Air Force people growing up who got to fly for free.  Basically you're just taking their passenger planes that haven't been filled with military personnel.  However, it is a tedious process sometimes.  You're basically on standby (to see if the plane actually does fill up and if it does you have to wait for the next one) and you end up going wherever the plane goes (which sometimes is different than where it originally was going).  I've heard that it isn't worth the "free" price tag since there are so many things that can happen.

  • Thanks for the good info guys, I'll call around.

  • American Airlines! I was going to book online for H and I to fly roundtrip from jax-fresno for Thanksgiving and it was going to be $1600. I called, and we were given the military rate, we are going now for $1200!!!!
