Has anyone had a company retreat at their job? I am in charge of planning this type of event where I work with 3 of my co-workers. It will be for about 20-25 people, including all the "bosses." The goal is to have some sort of team-building exercises during the day (preferably that are not work-related), and a cocktail party/dinner in the evening. Ideas we've come up with so far are some sort of scavenger hunt and a volunteer activity at a local soup kitchen. Any ideas?
Re: ideas for retreat
You can learn fun facts about co-workers but if you are planning it, you can't play.
You give each player a sheet with everyone's name & a blank line. In advance, each player gives you one "fun fact" about themselves that they are OK sharing in a work setting. [For example, when I play this game I usually offer as my fun fact that I have a Dalmatian or that I love to read trashy romance novels. You don't want TMI if you get my drift] From that you make the answer sheet. The players then wander around talking to each other trying to figure out who is who.
Another work related one is everybody gets an index card. On the front they write 3 office / business things they like to do, even if it's not directly related to their job. For example, once a week I water the office plants b/c I enjoy it. On the back they write 2 things they hate to do. I don't like making coffee b/c I don't drink it.
You usually find out somebody who doesn't hate cleaning out the refrigerator or somebody who is willing to pick up the birthday cards etc.
we just had a great work retreat that had a combination of work related stuff and non-work related activities.
We all took the FIRO - B / Personality test and had a guest speaker give us a breakdown of how everyone can work together. (We work in teams a lot so that was important)
Fun games include - guess the baby (everyone submitted a baby picture). You can also do guess the prom. Overall you know who is who but its just being able to "share" with each other.
We had a balloon activity that I also liked. It can have many variations like in this link: http://wilderdom.com/games/descriptions/gamesballoons.html
What we did is get in a circle and had one balloon, then they added more balloons an also some rules, like you have to touch the balloon only with your left hand or something like that. I thought it was a nice ice braker.
One final activity that we had and all really enjoyed was a painting excercise. We have tons of locations in our area (Chicago) that provide all the tools and work great with groups. Here is the place we used. http://bottleandbottega.com/ We all chose a company logo to paint and then we had the option of hanging the art work in our office. I highly recomend it.
Have fun, good luck and dont forget to provide snaks like candy throughout the day.
