Since it is excruciatingly hot outside I thought this poll was appropriate.[Poll]
Re: CPW: A/C
We keep it 74-75 during the day when I'm home (it's perfectly cool at that temp) but when H gets home he cranks his side of the house down to 70. And it makes his half of the house FREEZING. I can't really blame him though since he's out in the heat all day.
My next door neighbor's husband likes his house cold too, and they just got their electric bill--$601. I would DIE.
We keep ours on 71. Since it cools down in the house at night it makes it easier to sleep. I can not sleep if it's hot in the house. When we visited my parents they kept their's on at about 76. I thought I was going to sweat to death. I will gladly pay a little more to be comfortable.
78 day, 76 at night. Those two degrees make a lot of difference when sleeping in a bed with a hot-natured husband and at least one warm cat!
There are times here in the afternoon that I get chilled, and I am not cold-natured at all. Our a/c does a good job of keeping it cool, but the double-pane windows help a ton. Thank you, previous owners, for doing that one thing right.
I was keeping it cooler than that, but last month's electric bill was about 2.5x the previous bill...so I decided to do my part and keep it warmer. I've hardly noticed. We also have ceiling fans in most rooms, and those make a huge difference.
I can't really justify setting it cooler. I once read that it should be set about 20-25 degrees cooler than the outside temp, so at 100-105 I'm pretty close to that.

If I had my way, we would have ours set at 72. If H had his way, it would be at 68.
So we compromise and keep it at about 70. He managed to sneak it down to 69 for a while, but that changed when we got our last electric bill.
my bookshelf!
Bloggy
We are the same way. DH especially is very hot natured. Our house is usually at 70 and 68 when we sleep. I always freeze everyone out in the office. They keep it around 80 and I always come in and bump it down. I can't stand for it to be that warm.
Perfect timing for this thread... our a/c went out.
H and I went for dinner at Trattoria Il Centro, got home and the house was 89 degrees. It's currently 91, so we're booking a hotel. UGH. So miserable.
Yikes! I've heard so many people saying this recently. Hope you're able to find some place cool tonight!
We keep it at 70. Sometimes when we get home it's 75 and I usually end up in shor shorts and a tank top with a fan on. Yay I have a problem I know.
On a nerdy note...I was talking to an a/c guy and he said most house a/c's are only capable of cooling the house 20 degrees cooler than the outside temp. So if it's 100 your house a/c can only cool to 80 before it's working overtime. Which is why we've had so many people lose their a/c. Sorry mcgillicuddy!!! He said if your unit is exposed (sounds dirty huh?) try building a large wooden box over the unit that is open towards the house. The box has to be at least 2 feet higher at the top so the fan can run. If you aren't so good with the carpentry you can get a mister and put it near the unit so it be coolish while it runs. BUT you have to turn it off at night because it will freeze up. Which I didn't understand if it's 98 degrees at midnight how the hell is it going to freeze up but whatever.
Whew! That makes me feel better. We've had to get our a/c fixed once last summer and three times the summer before that. It's ancient and supposedly the original a/c from the house (our house was built in 1970, yikes!) I was afraid ours might be giving up slowly, but it's nice to know that it's about normal for this type of heat. *knock on wood*
Sorry, McGillicuddy! That sucks! I hope it can be fixed soon!

A/C repair people can't get to us until SATURDAY! Argh.
I'm having my wisdom teeth taken out tomorrow morning, so our status has been upgraded to "emergency." Hopefully they can get to us sooner. Horrible timing!
