Work From Home Jobs

Anyone know of well known companies that offer jobs that allow you to work from home?  For example, I thought I remember hearing that Jet Blue representatives work from home.  I hope to possibly find something next year.  There are no opportunities in my immediate area and searching on careerbuilder/monster/etc. just bring up a lot of sales jobs or gimic postings.  If anyone knows of companies that offer this, please let me know.  Thank you!

Re: Work From Home Jobs

  • What is your educational background/area and level of experience?
  • Most work from home CS reps works as contractors or independent businesses through larger agencies hired by the companies. I believe Jet Blue is one of these. I looked into this recently and the agencies required you have a specific operating system (XP, Vista, etc.) dependent on what they run, seperate phone line from your home phone that's not cable or internet provided, and some of them make you pay for a background check. Then you would take a non-paid certification (which some charged you for) to get certified to work with them, as well as take non-paid training to test for any company you wanted to work for. Each project may last days or weeks, but from what I understand non are really long-term.

I just couldn't figure out if the pay would be worth it after paying the phone line, taxes (taken at self-employed rate if you incorporated), possibly certification  and background check, and figuring in the time worked unpaid to vie for individual jobs or have "training" meetings.

I decided it wasn't for me, but if you like I can pm you the names of the companies I looked into so you can do some research yourself.

  • I have a friend who works for Sprint in admin/HR. I know that company has a large work from home culture. Not sure if they have any offices close to your area, though. I know she has to go in to the office about once every 2 weeks. It's a PITA commute on those days since she lives a couple hours away, but this job has allowed her to live in a more remote area, which she enjoys - something she wouldn't want to do if she had to fight rush hour traffic twice a day, five days a week.

  • Citibank allows their CSRs (maybe other positions too, but this is the only one I know for sure) to work from home. But you have to have worked for them for a while and be one of their best/most highest producing employees to be able to do this.  They also require you to have an office space that can be closed off from the rest of your house. I believe they will set it up for you though as far as the phone lines, computer, etc.
  • There are a coiuple of legitimate work at home companies such as Arise, WEst at home, liveops, acd direct, teletech etc.. Here is a blog of a fellow live ops agent that has a list of some legitimate work at home jobs.
