Vent

I've got a family vent.  Background: I have a huge extended family - 70+ people that typically get together for all major holidays.  Will is the 22nd great grandchild.  Yes, 22nd.

For Will's first birthday we are having a small party at our house with immediate family, our friends with small children, and some of Will's friends from Kindermusik. I do not want the whole family at my house for various reasons.

My aunt thinks that it is awful that I am not having a huge party for Will at her house.  Um...it's my child I want to have a party at my house.    Not to mention that another cousin has already announced that she is having her child's 3rd birthday party (that the whole family is invited to) on the same day.  This is for the grandchild of the aunt that is making the fuss.

Apparently I am depriving my child.  Ugh.

  • 22nd?! Good gracious. That IS a big family!

I hate when family members get like that. H's family wasn't too thrilled that I did some small thing at my parents' house for JJ's birthday, but whatever. They weren't paying for it, and I could care less if they showed up if they were going to be like that. You're the mom; you call the shots. Still really annoying though.

  • Wow, that is a huge family! I really hate it when family gives you a hard time! It just sucks! It's your son so do what u want for his birthday! Don't worry about what your Aunt or anyone else has to say!

ITA! It isn't like they were paying for it and therefore would have some say in the location and guest list. Family can reeeeally difficult to deal with sometimes.

  • Good Lord...I agree it's your kid you call the birthday shots.
  • Ugh! Totally understand. We had this problem with Carly's baptism. Told MIL the date and she told all of her siblings; then she had to tell them they weren't invited bc we did the luncheon at our house afterwards and it was TIGHT with just immediate family. I agree, you're the mom, you call the shots but it doesn't make it easy. :(

  • Maybe I'm weird but I really don't see the purpose of a 1st birthday being more than just a few friends/family anyway.  It's not like the child will care or remember and from experience it usually throws them off of their schedule and they get cranky.  That's just my opinion though.

I think you are doing the right thing.  Your family will get over it and I betcha Will won't remember being "deprived" AT ALL!

    Do you have a theme?

  • I kind of agree w/ Ash. I would much rather throw DD a larger party when she can remember it, KWIM?

You're the mom, you're the boss (please remind me in 11 months...).

    And 22 grandkids?? holy crap...

  • 22 grandkids...omg, that's insane.  I can't even fathom a family that large considering I'm the only grandchild.
  • Oh please.

I feel like everyone now throws these out of control birthday parties for their children.  My family does this and it drives me nuts.  I swear half the time the kids have no idea it is about them.  It's all about people drinking and at some point getting around to singing happy birthday.

I've got Robert's birthday planned for next year.  15 people max, pizza, cake and all the Wiggles he can shake his little booty to.

BTW-Robert is obsessed with the Wiggles.

  • Your party sounds perfect.

We ended up with lots of friends for Nate's party because none of our family could make it, but I would have loved just our immediate family.

  • You know, I make.a pretty good living face painting at huge, elaborate first birthdays and I.still think it's completely unnecessary. I think it started as a cultural thing; certain nationalities are big on the crazy first birthdays (I've worked ones with dance troupes and magicians), and then it leaked into the mainstream via a "keeping up with the Joneses" attitude.
