salary history

how do you address this on a job application? i really try not to address it at the application stage but a position i'm applying for requires it and it's a job i'd actually love so trying to be extra careful about following their procedure.

also, i have to apply via their site, so not sending an e-mail directly. i am leaning towards just a line in my cover letter about my salary requirements being negotiable. 

thoughts?

  • If it's a fed job, I can tell you that when I applied for my current (fed) position I had to list my salary history, so I put the salary info in the resume with the rest of the content about that job.  E.g. "Director of the Universe, XYZ Company" then further down "Salary: $4,570,000" (ha ha).  If that makes sense.
    Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • it's not a fed job (and would actually require us relocating back to the NYC area so that is a factor i have to keep in mind too)

  • why don't you put down your actual salary?
  • Maybe something like: In previous positions, my salary has ranged from $X to $Y. For this position, my salary requirements are negotiable.
  • Would your current salary +5-10% (then adjusted for COL) be a suitable first offer from them?  If yes, then there's little harm in listing your salary history. 

    If you can skip it on the app, do so.  Then put a range in your cover letter.  "Negotiable" isn't helpful.  They need to know if you're in their range. You can always say that based on a cursory understanding of the position, your range is whatever.  That gives you an out when the job sounds way more work than (or less) than it was advertised.  Someone's gotta give a number first, and both sides are taught not to.  It's tough!

    i put negotiable and my most recent salary. this would be a step up and i'd expect more work/higher expectations than my last position in the industry. the 5-10% would be on the very low end of what i'd ideally want, especially with having to relocate. i seriously hate this question because, as julie said, we're taught to be vague or not give a number. and it just seems like a way to low ball candidates. the job search hell never ends.

    Good luck!  That is a Catch 22 - put the salary, then have them low ball you, don't put the salary, they may not consider you.  Blech.
