Social Workers-program question/line of work question
I applied for a MSW program. I wrote a paper (APA style), submitted 3 letters of reference, and a personal statement. I am waiting to see if I was accepted. Is anyone here a Social Worker? What specific line of work do you do?
TIA
Re: Social Workers-program question/line of work question
I am starting my MSW program in August, so I can't offer too much info. I have two friends - one is a LCSW who used to own a private practice - now she works for the military as a clinical counselor. The other friend is working for the state in behavioral health.
Thank you all for your imput! I cannot decide what I would do if/when I get my MSW-I taught for three years, but am not sure if I will work with children/familes or enter another line of social work.
My other question-and I know it depends on where you live-how easy was it to get a job after you graduated? Do certain jobs in social work hire you for entry-level if you are working on your Masters?
TIA
I'm late to the conversation but I have a MSW and BSW. I worked 2 yrs then I went back to get my MSW in 2002. When I just had my BSW I was a county child welfare worker and I sucked at it. I don't have the attention span to focus on a case for over a 3 days It is a shame but true. Since getting my MSW I have gotten my LSW and I have worked in the admissions dept. of a psych hospital doing psychosocial assessments and I love it. I've also worked ER, which I also liked a lot. I hear interesting stories get them to their appropriate level of care and then I can focus on the next person. I have definitely found my niche in our field.
I think as far as getting hired the two hospital jobs I mentioned required an MSW but the county child welfare only required a degree and passage of the civil service exam, which i did with flying colors I just could not or would not apply that knowlege to my actual job.
