Gardeners - where can I find watering stakes?

Or something similar for a couple of my potted plants?

I'm going to OOT for 6 days and while I am taking my dog with me, I completely forgot about getting someone to water my plants - and my neighbor who would normally help me out with it is also going to be OOT.

I've got 5-6 potted plants on the front and back porch that are doing SO WELL lately I would be so bummed to come home and them be dead.  I'm hoping for some rain for the lawn (sorry everyone, I've been doing a rain dance all week) but was hoping to find some sort of system that would at the very least make my plants not absolutely completely fried and somewhat salvagable by the time I get back.

I'm leaving Saturday so there is no real time to ship something online, and I checked Home Depot and Target today with no luck.  Any suggestions of anywhere else to check in the Silver Spring/MoCo area?

Thanks....

Re: Gardeners - where can I find watering stakes?

  • I think I've seen the glass bulb ones at CVS of all places.  The gel ones however might be a better choice.  You should be able to find them at a garden center, I know Meadows Farms and Merrifield carries them.
  • if you can't find anything and the plants can survive without sun for that time, you can bring them inside and put them in your tub with a few inches of water (presuming there are drip holes open at the bottom). Allegedly (bc I've never tried this myself) the water will seep up through the roots and keep the plants alive. (I've seen this recommended many places - folks also put all the plants in a baby pool and fill with water -- if they need sun, this might be a better idea. (and you can reuse the baby pool for your dog -- my pooch, Bailey, LOVES to lay in hers!)

Or - create a water drip bag like gardeners put around trees - use a hefty ziplock bag, fill with water, close, poke TINY hole(s) in the bottom and place on the dirt... water will drip out ever so slowly (Again, holes must be TINY).

Excellent places to start.... thanks ladies!!

Two can't come in b/c they are mandevilla and have wrapped themselves around my deck rails - the others can definitely come inside - I'll try the tub thing if I can't find the stakes - makes sense.

    Thanks!!

  • Do you have an Ace Hardware near you? The one near me has them.

Ooh!  There is one right up the road!  Cool, I'll try there.  Thanks Pixie!
