Speaking of MARTA....

what's your experience with it?

Do you think a 30 year old female should be able/willing to take it to the airport to catch a flight out? Does the time of day matter to your answer?

I'll update WHY I ask this once I have a consensus.

Re: Speaking of MARTA....

  • I have taken it to the airport before but with a girlfriend, not alone.  I could certainly manage to take it by myself but I'll admit, I'm pretty MARTA skiddish.  When I was younger we were on a packed train after a Braves game and a guy pulled out a knife b/c two other guys were making fun of his girlfriend.  Pretty much scarred me for life when it comes to MARTA.  I'd much rather drive and park at the airport.

  • I take it all the time to the airport (by myself and with DH), and have taken it back from the airport by myself at 10pm on a Sunday night, with no problems.  So yes, I think a 30 yr old female should be able to take MARTA by herself to the airport.

That said, I commuted to work on MARTA for 14 months - riding it every day for that long has probably made me more comfortable with it than most people.

  • I wouldn't catch it too late at night( like 11pm and later) but otherwise it's the easiest way to get to the airport. So yes I think a grown woman should be able to take Marta.

  • I've done that by myself before and felt perfectly comfortable. But since the latest crop of crime, I might be a bit uneasy unless it was early in the day.

However, I have since realized that marta does not make sense for me b/c the time it takes to drive to a marta station, wait for the train, and ride it all the way down to the aiport, etc. took quite a bit longer than driving straight to the airport and parking somewhere.

  • I have caught it at all times of the day going to/from the airport. If I'm by myself though I only go when I have a carry on. It can be a hassle to haul a lot of luggage.

  • I used to take it regularly and never had a problem or saw anything too crazy.... Then again, that may be because all my crazy experiences were from taking the NYC subway when I was growing up.  lo.
  • I'll answer now:

what's your experience with it? I've had mostly good experiences (more recently its been fine), 1 or 2 WTF IS GOING ON HERE scenarios. The #1 was the time DH and I were at the North Ave station after seeing Ron White @ The Fox. He RAN ahead of me, caught the train and the conductor saw us both running to catch it,  and shut the doors between us. YES, it wa son purpose. DH rode the (correct) train all the way to N. Springs where we'd parked. Hmm A$$holio didn't even have the courtesy to get off at the next stop and wait for me. I mean... HE was on the right train afterall... oh yeah. He still hears about that to this day! I could have taken any crazy person at that time. Trust. There was no one crazier or more pissed off than me at that moment.

Do you think a 30 year old female should be able/willing to take it to the airport to catch a flight out? Does the time of day matter to your answer? A friend of ours needed to catch a flight on a Sat night. SHE was the one stalling because her flight took off at 11PM, and she prefers to spend her evening at the local (N. Marietta) mexican restaurant she favors. So we as a group of ~15ppl are all sitting around dining and her chosen driver has to get up at 6AM for work (on Sun, yes). So her plan was to stay at the mexican joint until 8:30PM and then have our friend take her at that time. I said "well, I can take you. No prob. I'll drop you at the Medical Center MARTA station so I can get back home." Other friend is releived that she get go home to bed. We had a diff group of friends coming over at 8:30PM, so I was asking her to GTFO by 8PM, so we'd head down I-75/I-285, and  she'd be on the train by 8:30PM. Done. Right?

She talks a 3rd friend in to taking her to the airport instead. Because she will not ride MARTA by herself.

She works downtown 6 days a week, and has for years. She was born/raised in Marietta.

She has NEVER taken MARTA anywhere. I found that out that night. She didn't know how to get a pass, asked if she could use plastic to buy one... etc.

I was very HmmHuh?Tongue Tied after hearing that.

Side.eye.  No reason a grown woman can't take MARTA on a Saturday night.  I might forgive it if she'd previously had a bad experience on MARTA, but that's obviously not the case here since she's never taken it.

  • I honestly avoid MARTA if at all possible. I really don't need to use it anyway--it's not convenient for me to get to (more of a hassle than just driving myself). But if I had to I would be nervous going alone and would definitely not do it at night. Maybe I'm just a baby though. Should a 30 year old woman be able to use it--yes. Does she necessarily want to? Maybe not.

  • I ride MARTA every day to get down to GSU.  I prefer riding than sitting in traffic b/c I can read.  I think everyone should know how to use public transportation, but I didn't always think that way. I love riding PT when we travel too.

What makes you nervous about it?

Also it is a very limited transit system so for many people it's not practical to use. I work in North Fulton County and live in the city so I usually make H park the car at the airport( he works in the city) meanwhile I take marta. Want to talk Hassles? 400 South to the Downtown connector on a Friday afternoon, no thanks!!

However I nearly had a nervous breakdown when we decided to park the car for free near a Marta station while we took a 10 day trip overseas. We got back to Atlanta in the evening and that train took 20 minutes to leave. Meredith after a 12 hour flight waiting 20 minutes for a train to come was an ugly sight. U-G-L-Y

  • Probably more of a "fear of the unknown" type of thing. Plus it seems to not be in the best area. I guess I avoid it mainly because I have no use for it, and it would be a hassle. I've ridden it before and compared to some other cities, it's much more complicated. For instance, I just got back from Boston, and riding their subways and trains are a piece of cake (or at least it was simple to me).

I agree though about 400. I avoid that crap like the plague.

This is a little confusing since our transit system is one of the easiest to navigate. You can either go north/south or east/west. It's not like NYC or DC where they loop all around and you have to change trains a bunch of times.  I don't ever ride the buses, and it can be a hassle if you don't live close to a station, but I don't really understand it being "complicated."  Just my opinion though! Smile
