Possible new job and planned vacation

I'm sure this gets asked a lot, but here it goes anyway.  I interviewed yesterday for a job that I have a really good chance at getting.  A friend who worked there and still has contacts said that I am the top contender.

They will likely want someone to start immediately which is fine.  I do have a vacation planned in mid-August.  When would this come up, after they "hopefully" offer the job, but before I start?  I'm guessing that would be the time to bring it up and I would not expect to be paid for the time off, of course.

The good news is that the woman I would be replacing is going to be sticking around for a few months at part time so she could easily step in for the week...I think.

Re: Possible new job and planned vacation

  • your guessing is correct. The question comes up all the time and telling them when they make the offer is usually recommended.

  • I've been in this situation a number of times. I always schedule my vacations with a good amount of lead time so, I've had to tell my last few employers that I had vacation time scheduled when I accepted an offer.

Depending on when they make the offer, you just need to explain that you'd love to start as soon as possible but that you need time off for a scheduled (and already paid for) vacation.

Some companies will just agree to have you start after vacation and other companies will agree to give you the time off unpaid (since you likely won't have accrued vacation time yet).

I have NEVER had an issue getting time off after explaining this to a new employer and negotiating it at the time of my acceptance.

  • I'm so glad you asked this because this is happening to me.  Who knows if I'll get the job though.
