Sewers: experience with Crypton fabric?

I'm wanting to make dog beds and am thinking of using Crypton fabric.  However, it doesn't come cheap and while it will be worth it for cleaning & durability, I need to know that I'll be able to sew with it. I can sew basic things but I'm not exactly an experienced seamstress.

Does anyone have experience with Crypton?  Is it easy to work with?  TIA

Re: Sewers: experience with Crypton fabric?

  • I'm curious as to why you selected Crypton to make dog beds. There are tons of other fabrics out there that are easier to clean and a lot easier to work with. Cryptons have no stretch to them because a "crypton" is basically a plastic back that prevents moisture from penetrating the fabric. It can be applied to any fabric. If you are looking for something durable look for a contract grade upholstery which basically means that the fabric has been tested and has a rating of 30,000 double rubs.

Our in-house upholsterer (at work) hates 90% of the cryptons we send him because they are hard to work with due to their stiffness. Most cryptons are hard to keep clean because of the chemical used to make them a moisture barrier. It likes to gather dirt and most cleaners will break the moisture barrier down and leave you with a normal fabric.

If it was me I would purchase something that I could throw in the washing machine.

It was a fabric that I kept reading was durable and great for cleaning/stain resistance, perfect for dog beds.  Essentially, I had the impression it was everything you say it's not so that's good to know.  Also, because I have no clue what this means or where to find something like that...

Again, I'm not exactly a seasoned seamstress. I mean, I can sew but my projects are usually made of cute cotton/cotton blend fabrics from Joann's not specialty fabrics, lol.

  • I'm torn.  I made a couple dog beds from the Wegman Crypton fabrics and I like them.  I loooove the Wegman designs.  I have machine washed the beds many, many times and the Crypton still looks great.  I found it quite easy to cut and sew with.  No problems at all.

My one hesitation is the cost.  It's high and not justifiably so, IMO.  I make smallish beds, too -- about 18" x 24".

  • Go with your gut :) Crypton fabric is the perfect choice for dog beds!  Everything you've heard is true because Crypton is used quite heavily in the hospitality industry. Yes the fabric is stiff and heavy, but as long as you have a good heavy duty needle, say one for heavy jean material, and a decent machine, you shouldn't have a problem. After finding really cute pet design dog beds, made with Crypton fabric in a catalog, I researched Crypton fabric quite extensively on-line because those ready-made beds were so expensive. After making my informed decision to go ahead with the Crypton material, I searched for cheap suppliers, and found one @ www.newtoto.com, where they sell remnant pieces and by the yard at reasonable prices. They offer free swatches too. I also found another site www.fabrichideaway.com. I don't have any experience with this site yet, but their prices are great as well! Granted, they don't have the really cute pet designs, but I'm happy with the choice I made. Our Sheltie's bed doesn't hold any odor, it's easy to clean (in the washer), and it's easy on the eyes!  I have more fabric to make for our larger dog, and can't wait to find the time to do it!  You won't be disappointed :)   Well, after writing this, I realized that your post was dated nearly a year ago, so if you haven't made your dog bed yet, I hope my response helps...Always a day late and a dollar short, snap!
