Neurologist rec?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a neurologist?  I usually try to stick to doctors on my side of town but for this I think I will be willing to drive.

Re: Neurologist rec?

  • I won't recommend mine b/c he's in The Woodlands & he irritated me so much that I quit going to him.  My neurosurgeon was great, but it takes 6+ months to get an appointment with him unless you've been hospitalized, so that probably won't help you much.

So, after all that unhelpful information I just wanted to say that I hope everything is okay.  I want to know what's going on, but I understand if you don't want to share that information.

  • Since you asked (sort of), here's the long version. :)

More than a year ago I noticed numbness around the left side of my mouth and in the last two fingers on my left hand.  It went away but came back late last year along with vertigo, hearing loss in my left ear and tinnitus.

Went to my PCP who sent me for an MRI.  It looked fine so he sent me to an ENT because of the hearing loss.  I wasn't thrilled with him because the only thing he wanted to talk about was my inflammed sinuses (of which I have NO symptoms and wouldn't have even known about without the MRI).  Went for a few tests and he said the best he could figure is that I have Meniere's Disease (build up of fluid onthe middle ear).  But he said that would not explain the numbness/tingling.

I took the diuretics to treat Meniere's Disease but they made me feel horrible.  ENT said I have to choose which was worse, the illness or the treatment.  I chose not to take the diuretics.  Everything was fine.  Every once in a while I would notice the ringing in my ear.

Skip forward a few months to last week.  The last two fingers on my left hand are so numb they feel cold.  My left eye twitches constantly  as well as my lip every now and then.  My face is also numb and the tinnitus is driving me crazy.  No vertigo, thank God.

I just want to know that whatever is causing all of these symptoms isn't a big deal.  They are not at all painful, just annoying.  My PCP told me that if the ENT couldn't help me a neurologist was the next step.  I think it's time to make an appt.

  • DH saw one a while back.  He was having numbness and burning in his arm.  I think he saw one in Spring, but I will ask anyway.

  • Dr. Shukla in Sugarland is awesome. My DH has narcolepsy and after many visits to many doctors it was Dr. Shukla who finally took the time to listen to him and diagnose him.

  • I tried to ask without coming out & asking.  My mother raised me to never ask questions about someone's health in a public setting.

I remember all the stuff with Meniere's, my sister has that too & she also just chose to live with it.

I hope you find a solution to the numbness, that sounds no fun at all & rather scary.  Good luck!

My dad goes to see Dr. Sheila Jacobson near Memorial City.  She's wonderful.

  • no rec....but sounds scary - hope you find a (real) answer!!
  • Thansk for the suggestions!

Dana-  I was pretty scared at first but since tests have ruled out a brain tumor and MS it's more annoying now than anything.

Dr. Google did say that it could be an electrolyte imbalance.  That would make some sense with the hot, humid weather and me upping my workouts.

  • I see Dr. Rosenfield.  Every two years, I go in for an EMG study to see how my nerve damage in progressing.  He doesn't really give you that warm fuzzy feeling, but he is very good.
