Mario Batali and Michigan
Re: Mario Batali and Michigan
My Detroit friend emailed that to me this morning and I proceeded to go on a cranky local rant about how tourists and summer residents are part of the problem.
I've been a cranky, bitter Lake MI local all summer...
I think national attention is such a double edged sword. I love to see it, but I'm nervous about big-city people coming in with their big-city attitudes and spoiling our laid back places.
L and I have been to Boone's! We went there on our first trip wine tasting for one of my birthdays.
1. I've never seen a cherry as big as an apple in all my 30 years in MI
2. We love the Cooks' House... but we did have to wait once
3. Did anyone else find it ironic that "Leland" is mentioned?
4. I love Traverse City but I hope it doesn't become big and commercialized just because of one former FN star's admiration of it

I love to see Michigan awesomeness promoted nationally! Then again, I don't live in one of the touristy, lakefront cities so I'm not usually directly affected by the influx of people.
I've never been to any of the restaurants mentioned in the article.
I do agree with GRKaters, though. While some exposure is great, I hope that Traverse City doesn't change as a result of the spotlight and the extra people.
I really don't think this would happen. People who follow the Bon Appetit blog aren't looking for chain restaurants. And big city attitudes don't want chains either. The fewer the tables, the better. They don't want to go some place that everyone else is going. They want to be unique.
I think our Northern MI gems are safe from ruin!
There is already entitlement everywhere. Even small town MI. Pushing and shoving is of course awful, but when you are on vacation and in such a beautiful relaxing place as northern MI, there is no need for such behavior. You have more space.
It think it is much better to focus on the fact that our state received some good publicity and that these local businesses might see an increase in business.
