Hey! Were heading to Maine today for some vacation (yay!). Anyway depending on what time we leave here (depending on when DH can get out of work) we may be hitting the NY area around rush hour. UGH!
Anyway here was my plan, but I figured I would run it by you guys to see what you thought trafficwise. Our GPS wants us to take the NJ pike to the GW Bridge. I was thinking of branching off the turnpike onto the Garden State Parkway and taking that north to 87 and crossing the TappenZee (sp?) bridge. Then taking 684 north to 84 or continuing on 95 through CT. Good or dumb idea? Our only other option to avoid the area would be to go straight north from here and go all the way to 84 in PA and then cut over above NYC.
Wow this got long, but any ideas?
Re: NYC Area girls (traffic question)
Its a crapshoot really. 95 in CT can be HORRIBLE I went to school in Fairfield and remember miserable hours sitting on 87/287/95. I think the best thing to do is to listen to the traffic right before you leave.
I don't know much about 84 in PA but that might be worth looking at an option esp if you have to end up on 84 anyway.
Have fun in Maine. My friend from college is getting married there in Oct and I'm debating attending or not....
So this isn't probably what you want to hear. I don't know the traffic in that area too well, but I can tell you that on Friday afternoons in the summer the bridge and tunnel traffic can be brutal. I live between the Holland and Lincoln tunnels so can't avoid the traffic much and I try to leave work by 3 PM on summer Fridays so that I don't get stuck.
So, the GSP to the Tappen Zee might be better. I know the GSP can get pretty bad though. BUT, honestly my biggest concern for you is the traffic in CT. Everytime I've gone that way (such as if I'm driving to Boston) the traffic on 95 and 84 is awful, especially on Fridays. My dad lived in CT for a short time and I remember going to visit him and it taking me 3 hours to do a trip that should have been an hour.
PS: just checked and the Yankees are at home tonight. Definitely avoid the GWB because it gets a lot of the game traffic, and the road you'll get on once you're over it goes right by the stadium.
Thanks ladies! Hmmmm I know 95 in CT is bad thats why I thought taking 684 to 84 would work better.
The only issue with taking 84 from PA is it adds 30-50 miles to the trip...though it sounds like it may be faster after all....I'm going to go play around with Googlemaps some more!

I HATE the GW Bridge soooooooooooooooooooooo much. It is ALWAYS busy, even if it is like 3AM. I would avoid it at all costs, lol
I think your best bet is to try to avoid as much of NYC as you can lol

lol I take the GWB every day!
you just need to know the secrets. Though w/ a Yankee game bring traffic to the cross bronx (which is really the problem) the secret is to avoid!!
