New Navy Wife

Aloha all,

I'm pretty new here and new to married life as well. A little about me, I'm a year out from finishing up a 5 year enlistment in the Navy and now using my college benefits while my husband finishes up his own Navy enlistment. I was mostly stationed on shore duty, but in my last year was stationed on a ship that deployed twice where I was gone for 3 months at a time on each deployment.

My husband and I got married this past May, and they are currently on a short 1 month deployment to do all that fleet week stuff goin on over there. This is the first time since we've met that we've been separated so long and it's awkward for me not having a job and attending very low-demanding classes that meet once a week. I'm bored out of my mind, all my friends are pregnant now (and I honestly can't take all that pregnant talk anymore).

Anyways, sorry this is long. Just wondering what you ladies (or gents) do to pass the time when your loved ones are away.

I miss him in everything that I do on a daily basis and makes it hard to enjoy the little things anymore.

Re: New Navy Wife

  • Welcome to the boards!
My FI is leaving for basic training for the Navy next month so I don't have any experience with him being gone yet. What do you enjoy doing? Do you have any hobbies?

  • Hi and welcome.

When MH is gone, I try to get out of the house as much as possible.  Go for a walk in the evenings.  Go see a movie.  Go sit in the park and read a book.  Take a crafting class on post or at a hobby store.  Try to have some fun.

  • Volunteer at the animal shelter, boys and girls club, habitat for humanity, meals on wheels.

Read a book that you haven't had time to sit down and tackle, or watch a movie that you never got a chance to watch while he was with you.

My H left 10 days ago for a 3 week deployment, so I've been painting and I bought new decorations for the bathroom.

I've been cleaning like crazy.  I cleaned the cieling fans, I've organized our basement, taken care of some car stuff we've been meaning to do.

I've been trying new recipes.  Last night I made mexican pizzas and I've been trying vegetarian dishes that I know he'd never try.

I have dogs that I take to new places in town and walk them.  When H is here we usually just walk around the neighborhood, but we've been walking up by the lake, on little trails north of town.  They love being on a new trail and it gets me away from the house for a bit.

  • Hi, H is Navy and leaves for an 8 month deployment soon.  I have some projects planned that I am pretty excited about.  I got a sewing machine and have found some simple quilts to try and a few different bags.  I also want to learn to knit.  We have a son so I got involved with a moms group.  I also read a ton when H is gone.  I also tackle a lot of organizational projects while he is gone.  I try to work out and eat super healthy while he is gone, since we do eat out a lot when he is home.  I cook a lot of veggie recipes that he would never try.  I'm also involved with our church.

  • Hi and welcome, I'm a Navy wife as well.  Where is your H stationed?  I'm thinking he might be with my H actually.

I work full time so that takes up a ton of time, and I'm very involved with the Command so that keeps me really busy.  Also I have made some close friends here who I'll get together with at least a couple times a week when the ship is gone.

I think what makes it the hardest is constantly focusing on how much better it would be if your H were there.  I just don't think about it, and just accept that this is how my life is right now.  If you constantly focus on the negative of it, and the sadness, then you're going to make your own life miserable.  No matter how much you miss him, or much you cry when he's gone, it's not going to bring him home any sooner, and it's just going to make it harder on you.  So instead you just need to focus on other things, like how great it is to be able to cook what you want when you want, and to be able to watch all the chick flicks and crappy tv you want without any arguments, and things like that.

  • What do I do to pass the time?

Well, let's see it's summer so I'm taking one class at the CC (low demand like yours probably are) then I harass my cats, play WoW and take care of the apartment. I'm definitely looking into some volunteer work, hopefully at the local animal shelter. I also hang out with other spouses, kind of a mix of people who do and don't have kids or jobs. I'm also signed up with two different temp. agencies who sometimes are able to find work for me and other times not.
