I am looking for some books to read. I recently finished the Hunger Games and all of Emily Griffin's books. I've been thinking about starting Harry Potter, but would like some good recommendations on others. I generally like fiction, but if you have a great non-fiction that would be wonderful! TIA!
Re: Book recs
Fiction:
The Help
Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy
Water for Elephants
How to be an American Housewife
The Handmaid's Tale
American Wife
Memoirs of a Geisha
nonfiction:
Unbroken
Devil in the White City
Ones I haven't read but want to: Room, Cutting for Stone, In the Garden of Beasts, Bossypants, Little Bee, The Mind's Eye, In Cold Blood
You can click the link in my signature for the books I've read. I've read some amazing ones this year.
If you liked The Hunger Games and want another good Young Adult dystopian, I highly recommend Divergent by Veronica Roth. It's the best dystopian I've read since The Hunger Games. Matched by Ally Condie is also a very good one.
If you want something more on the lighter side, Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins is freaking adorable on every level possible. Loved it.
If you want something by an Oklahoma author, Hereafter by Tara Hudson is really good. And it's a ghost story, but not really scary. Also a love story.
my bookshelf!
Bloggy
I second recommendations for all of the bolded.
My favorites that I have read lately have been The Red Tent, The Book Thief (a re-read for a book club - just as awesome the second time), The Name of the Wind (HIGHLY recommend this if you like fantasy at all), and Still Alice (sad, but very good - about a woman with early onset Alzheimer's).
On my to-read list are Game of Thrones, Born on a Blue Day (non-fiction by an autistic savant), Room.
A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones)
Ditto Handmaid's Tale and Memoirs of a Geisha
Sleepwalking in Daylight and I'm So Happy for You, both are reasonably light and fast reads.
Definitely read Harry Potter. Excellent books.
Memoirs of a Geisha is a must. Water for Elephants is excellent as well.
I know the Robert Langdon series isn't brand new or anything, but the books were great, I really enjoyed them. The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and The Lost Symbol all by Dan Brown.
Have you read Lord of the Rings? Also an excellent trilogy. Be sure to read The Hobbit too.
Run Like a Mother by Sara Bowen Shea and Dimity McDowell
Dublin Murder Squad trilogy by Tana French
In Death Series by JD Robb (Nora Roberts). Shutup, I liked them.
Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok
Columbine by Dave Cullen
Sole Sisters by Jennifer Lin, Susan Warner
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
The Other Side of the Story by Marian Keyes
I was also a big fan of the Millenium Series that has been mentioned already (The Girl with the ... series) and The Help
I should add that I don't have super discriminating tastes in books.
I'm on the last book of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy right now. I've been sucked in. Sooooo good. Sometimes a bit slow, but I just skip those parts. LOL
I recently read The Paris Wife and enjoyed it.
Someone mentioned Marian Keyes. I love all of her stuff, particularly Watermelon and Sushi for Beginners.
I also recently read Maureen Johnson's Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes and The Last Little Blue Envelope. They are YA and fun.
Read Harry Potter. DO IT. Love them. Honestly, I did't fall in love with them until book number 3, so don't give up!
I just got notification that Cutting for Stone was ready for me download off the library hold list onto my nook. Starting that one today!!
It's very good! (And it made me crave Ethiopian food. Lol.)
Read HP! I've never met anyone who read it and didn't like it.
I also always recommend the Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich. The first one is One for the Money, then there's Two for the Dough, and so on. They're light and fluffy and fun. I have major love for them (I'm sure I've mentioned this over and over and over again). And, if you're like me and get completely attached to characters, they're awesome because there are currently 20 books in the series. But, don't let that scare you... when I really read, I can finish on in a day or two.
I've also gotten to where I really like Harriet Evans. Her books are good stories that take place in England/Ireland/etc and never fail to make me want to live there.
I still think you should jump into HP. Like PP said, they can sometimes be slow, but all that seemingly unimportant information you get comes into major play throughout the series.
