Giving motrin/tylenol before vaccines?
Ava has her 4 yr old vaccines this afternoon and in the past, I have always just given my kids tylenol or motrin right before shots and for 24 hrs after "just in case." However, a friend of mine just mentioned to me that she had read some articles that suggested that giving pain relievers with vaccines could have some impact on the way the vaccines are processed and could make them slightly less effective. It was suggested that pain relievers only be given if the vaccine caused the child to have a high fever or be very uncomfortable. I have never heard this personally, but wondered if any of you had researched this at all? Thanks!
Re: Giving motrin/tylenol before vaccines?
You never want to give it before, because it could reduce a temperature that the kid might have from an infection you didn't know about. That's why they take temps before doing shots each time. A temp = no shots at our pedi.
After, we only give it if needed because it can reduce the effectiveness of the shot. Kinds need to run a bit of a temp if it's present, to build the immunity. If they get too warm or uncomfortable then it's okay, but I wouldn't do it simply as a precaution.
This is the advice from our pedi as well.
Lucas is normally exhausted and very clingy after his check-ups that involve shots. We haven't given him tylenol afterwards yet but I also wouldn't have a problem doing so if he were to run a high (higher than normal) fever or become incredibly uncomfortable for whatever reason.

We don't do it before b/c of the masking a fever thing, and due to the new research (your friend is correct) we don't do it after unless they are fussy. I used to give motrin at the office after their temp was taken b/c there was usually 1/2 hr before shots for it to kick in and help w/ the pain, but now that I know it can make them less effective (they should still work just fine, but we want to take all precautions), we only do motrin if necessary.
