Allergy Sufferers

I have the feeling I've asked this before but I can't remember.

What do you take for allergies?  I have been taking Claritin -- the kind with the psueodoephedrine in it.  I take the 12 hour one which lasts about 6.  It seems like I crash at the end of the day.  I have been thinking this is why I am so tired every day.

So I quit taking it and tried to get by with Sudafed (again with the pseudoephedrine) but it doesn't work as well and I now have the ear pain again that only the Claritin seems to get rid of.  And I'm still just as tired.

I'm tired of being so tired--if it weren't for my ear, I woud just say screw it and have allergies.  I am also very tired of taking psuedoephedrine--which honestly doesn't seem to do anything but make me tired.  But if I take anything else allergy related, I fall asleep immediately.

Any ideas?

Re: Allergy Sufferers

  • I take Omnaris nasal spray (prescription).   It is very expensive and not covered by my insurance but it is a miracle drug to my life and very much worth it.   I don't use as much as recommended and it still works great... and that makes my $ go farther too.

It is a steroid spray, so it won't make you sleepy.. either.

  • Have you tried taking the kind of Claritin without the pseudoephedrine?  Have you talked to your doctor about other recommendations?  Maybe alternative remedies, like the neti pot or something like that?  I know a lot of people swear by them, although it sort of freaks me out.

I don't take allergy meds, although I used to - I took Zyrtec and had the same problem.  I feel like my allergies are worse now, and that I should start taking something again, but I am worried about going back to the whole "being unable to drag myself out of bed" issues I used to have when I took it.

We have allergy patient's and we do these specialized allergy drops and shots we give to people who take meds everyday like you. You may want to see an ENT specialist with the ear problem you are talking about.

  • I was on Zyrtec but it was no longer helping me with my problems and then I was put on Singulair for a month or 2 but stopped because it did nothing for me.  Now I'm on Allegra and really enjoyed it until recently (after my last allergy appointment, go figure).  The doctor had me try Veramyst for the heck of it and I didn't really notice a difference between that and Allegra so I stayed on Allegra.

Like you I have been SO tired, specifically this week.  And the headaches I've been getting lately are getting ridiculous.  So I may be switching to something else.

Maybe it's time you went to see someone?

  • Thanks everyone.  Yes, regular Claritin D still makes me tired and doesn't seem to work as well.  I have considered seeing an ENT--but my regular doctor just said it was allergies and the ear pain does go away when I take Claritin.  And he has also suggested the neti pot and nasal drops--I just have this weird aversion to putting anything up my nose.

I was just wondering if allergies made anyone tired like they seem to do me.  I have sneezing, itching and drainage more so than just a stuffy nose so I wasn't sure if nasal stuff would work or not.

Yes! When you have allergies you have problems breathing which means your body doesn't get all the oxygen it needs thus making you tired. It's going to happen. Hope you feel better!

  • I take Allegra D. It doesn't seem to be working as well lately. I know after awhile the body will build up a tolerance to allergy drugs. I usually switch between Allegra and Zyrtec. I take allergy meds almost everyday. I'd like to see an Allergist. Anyone know a good one?

ETA: I'm sorry. I know that doesn't help you. I hope you find some relief soon.

  • I actually take the off-brand medicine at the pharmacy.  My doctor told me that as long as it has loratidine in it, then it will help me with my allergies.
  • My allergies got worse when we moved to LA. I cut out gluten & started eating some local honey and they are much better now.

YES!  My allergies make me tired, and the medicine typically does too.  I just take the over the counter 24hr claritin.  Since this spring, I've taken it very infrequently.  I used to use Omnaris like Tiffany.  That stuff is AWESOME!  Before I started using it, I was freaked out to stick anything up my nose.

Hope you figure out something that works for you.

  • I was exhausted yesterday (but couldn't sleep last night) thanks to my allergies.  I've been taking Allegra because the Zyrtec has gone missing.  It works okay but I think I like the Zyrtec better.
  • I would also experiment with when you take the medicine.  I prefer taking it at night but my allegra wasn't working so I switched to taking it in the morning and I'm doing better.
