letter of resignation questions

Okay...first of all, I don't really have a boss right now, so who do I address my letter of resignation to?  I was planning on resigning to my interim supervisor (they fired my old boss months ago & haven't hired anyone new yet)--but she's not the person who okays my timesheets, vacation days, etc--from HR's point of view I report to THAT person--the VP of my department.  He's out of town on business, so I can't really resign to him--at least not in person.  Should I just go with my first instinct and address the letter to my interim supervisor & let her notify HR?  What would you do?

Second, looking online at letter of resignation templates, it seems like a lot of them having wording something along the lines of "I am notifying you of my resignation from XXXX position at ABC company, effective [date]."  If my last day is a Friday--do I put the date of the last day I am working?  The following day (Saturday)? Or the following Monday?  Or is there a better way to word this?  Does it sound weird to just say: "I am notifying you of my resignation from XXXX position at ABC company.  My last day will be [Friday date]?"

I've been at my company so long, it's been a while since I had to write a formal resignation letter :)

Thanks!

Re: letter of resignation questions

  • What you said sounds fine and you might also add "I thank you for all the opportunities Ace Anvil Company has given me."

  • You can address the letter to the VP. He'll probably give it to HR. Don't overthink it--you won't get dinged for addressing it to the "wrong" person.

Put the last day you're working.

The letter you drafted is fine. Most of mine have been about that much and nothing more.

  • Thanks, ladies!

I was going to add a line of thanks, and something about helping with the transition, but haven't figured that part out yet. :)

Keep in mind that a resignation letter is merely paperwork for HR to have in your records to show dates of employment. Having something about enjoying working there is nice, but not critical.
