another resignation question...

So, I got the verbal offer yesterday from the head of the new company--it's a small company with no HR--and at the end he asked me to send him an E-mail basically stating what we had discussed and confirming my acceptance.  He said he'd work on the written offer--but didn't promise it by a specific date.  He has already been in E-mail contact with me today confirming start date & training and setting up meetings with me.

I agreed on a start date in ~3 weeks--I have a 1-week vacation starting in ~2 weeks that's been planned for some time already, and I agreed to start as soon as I got back from vacation.  So basically that means I have to give my 2 week notice today or Monday.  Everyone has over and over said NOT to give my notice until I have received the written offer, but what if that takes more than a week?

Also (coincidentally) just an hour ago or so I got an E-mail from the admin of my dept with a calendar invitation for a dept meeting Monday morning to basically discuss roles, responsibilites, and lay out tasks for a huge project starting up in a few weeks--so there's a little bit of guilt about not notifying them before the meeting.  I am expecting to be assigned a bunch of tasks (I have a huge role in this particular project--so far I've been the ONLY one working on it), and don't want to waste everyone's time--instead it would be nice to use this scheduled meeting as an opportunity to transition my tasks to others.

When I did a Google search I read some stories where some people NEVER got a written offer (even after being told they would)--they signed the contract & "accepted" on their first day of work.

I'm hoping I receive the written offer over the weekend, or no later than Monday, so I don't even have to worry about this--but what would you do?  Would you give your resignation if you hadn't received the written offer yet, just the verbal offer & a few follow-up E-mails?  Or would you wait and just give less than 2 weeks notice?

I'd like to come up with a back-up plan in case the written offer is delayed.

Thanks & have a nice weekend, nesties :)

Re: another resignation question...

  • I'd explain to the new guy that you need a written offer ASAP so you can give your current employer proper 2 weeks notice.
