If/When your DH works late, what do you do about dinner?

Cook at a normal time and eat without him? Cook later and wait for him to eat? Cook for yourself and make him fend for himself?

This is something that's becoming an issue for me.

Re: If/When your DH works late, what do you do about dinner?

  • S works until 8 or 9 on Thursday and travels about every other week for 1-3 nights. When it's just me and he is OOT I do tofu, tempeh, or eggplant (he hates all 3). When he is coming home late I typically make something that he can eat too and leave a plate for him or we do left overs.

I'm in bed by 8 most night, no way I'm waiting for him to sit down and eat!

My favorites to do are paninis; salad with steak/chicken, almonds and goat cheese; or an Asian inspiried noodle dish with pork. All 3 he can make/heat up or dress on his own if I am asleep

  • For us it really depends on how late he is coming home for dinner. If it is 7-7:30ish at the latest I cook later we eat together. Unless I happen to be really hungry. Even then I cook the meal and keep it warm for him.

  • It is a little different for me because of Parker.  I will feed Parker at normal time and eat after he goes to bed.  It is hard for me to make dinner for myself and him while watching him.  If Rusty is home once Parker goes to bed and I'm eating then I will eat with him.  If it is later than that then I will make sure he has something to eat, but I won't wait.

  • Usually lean pockets.  Or I might get fiesty and go for a grilled cheese or bowl of soup.

Or I just say Eff It and crack a bottle of wine and a pint of ice cream.

  • I usually wait until he's leaving work to start making dinner and eat with him. Occasionally, I'll be too hungry to wait so I make something that he can reheat later.

This. It works out for us-he works an hour away. I can make a good meal while he's driving home. I like just relaxing and enjoying a meal together. The only time I don't eat dinner with him at home is if he takes a late lunch (like around 4) and he's working until 7. Then I just fend for myself.

  • I do s mixture of the three. Sometimes I make something that he can warm up and he eats when he gets home, other times I just eat something easy/ takeout and he fends for himself.

  • If he's going to be late or out of town, I'll usually eat at the regular time...probably just a bowl of cereal, pasta, or Chef Boyardee (I'm obsessed with Spaghetti O's when he's away). He'll usually tell me when I should go ahead and eat without him.

However, on days that I'm late, like when I have grad class, I'll call him when I'm 20 min. away with a request. He's so good b/c he'll have it ready for me when I get home.

  • I'm on my own with Caitlin most nights since DH is away for work for about 4 days, home for 2, maybe 3, then gone again for about 4. I make actual dinners or we go out on nights that he is home. When he is away, I'll make easy stuff like grilled cheese, or something along those lines.

  • It doesn't happen that often for us, but when it does he usually just fends for himself and I make dinner for myself at the regular time. It's just easier that way since he's usually starving by the time he leaves the office in that situation and just grabs something on the way home.

  • This happens daily. I never wait for DH to eat with him. If I have enough energy to actually cook I eat what I want then leave the rest on the stove for DH to eat when he gets home. But it's nice that if I'm lazy, I can just grab a bunch of random stuff and munch and not have to worry about having to feed DH too.

  • On the nights David is on shift and not coming home, I obviously only make dinner for myself and I tend to have things that he doesn't like. Sometimes, I make a normal dinner for two and pack it up and bring it to him (because he's spoiled).

My suggestion would be to cook enough for both of you and let him re-heat his portion when he comes back.

The funny part of this whole thing is that SOON David will be the one trying to decide if he should make dinner without me or not! Sometimes I am going to have to stay until after 9 for board meetings!
