Closing Walter Reed?

Clicky

I had no idea! That's kind of sad, though in theory I'm all for consolidating things to save money. I'm glad they're going to keep some of the original buildings. I hope they open them as a museum.

Re: Closing Walter Reed?

  • (I'm a doctor at Reed) It has and will continue to be an interesting process...but the Army did (pretty much) win the "name game" so the new hospital will be called Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (at Bethesda [ Navy threw that in there at the last minute, haha]).

It has been in the works since 2005ish (I think) when Congress passed the Base Realignment and consolidation act. About 2/3s of us docs and about that many nurses are re-assigned to the new WRNMMC and the rest are going to the brand new hospital at Belvoir.

With regards to the grounds of the old Walter Reed the original hospital, church, museum and a few other buildings will be given historical status the rest are going to be turned into low income housing (this is what we hear); still not sure what's going to be done with the hospital.

  • It is bitter sweet. Grant began his existence at WRAMC in a petri dish. :o) Thank you for posting this, I did not realize it was closing so soon. I want to take LO and take pictures of him in front of the building. Guess I better get on that!

  • Yeah, this has been in process for a while. I know last time I was at NNMC, they were still building new garages and buildings. They also were beginning to move specialty clinics from Walter Reed to NNMC and DeWitt.

  • I found this out back in March. My fiance was injured and one of his stops was Reed before BAMC. I was very impressed with BAMC's facilities though
